The commanding officer of the Long Beach Naval station is opposed to motorcycles on station. and ~e will not permit them as long as he is in charge. There is some consolation on the way for 1500 motorcycle own~rs who park their motorcycles outSide the Naval station to the like of thieves. Plans are to fence in a special moto~ cycle parking area at gate 9. inst.all good lighting, and to have the parking in view of a sentry at all times. Recently, there has been popular belief that motorcycles may soon be permitted on t he station. P erhaps t his belief was founded by a favo rable discussion at a safety council meeting that concerned allowing motorcycles on the Naval Station or by Honda's safet~ film. "The Invisible Cir cl e." The film is provided for showing aboard ships or on the Naval Ins tallati ons th roug h t he courtesy of the Lo ng Beach Police Department. It i s in popula r de mand by men charged wit h safety progr ams , for it provides a ple asing contrast to t be gory films us ual ly produced by some distant state's highway department and commonly available for safety programs. Respect to motorcycle owners stationed aboard ships at Long Beach rat e s good; but the station commanding office r has absolute authority for base policies. If he should not like dill pickles served in the station's dining rooms , then he could scratch them from the station's menu and the re would be no more dill pickles until another man succeeded his position of command. His succ.esS?r will take over with the same poliCies 10 force. and he is not likely to change tbem without reason.. Someone must request in a persuasive manner that dill pickles be placed on the menu. The answer is definitely no to motorcycles on the Long Beach Naval Station. but I suggest that service men stationed on other military installations whe re motorcycles are not permitted su bmit a letter through their official channel to request a change in policy. If the answer is no, tlY again when a new man takes command fortunately the command changes frequently . Someday. there may be a man in charge wbo has owned a motorcycle or sports car during his youth. and he likely will approve. Onc:e a few of the large Naval Bases penmt motorcycles, surely this will start a trend that smaller ones will be willing to follow . The best aPllroach to work with military authorities is individually from within a command . Pre ssures from as~ ci ations , groups. firms, o r politicians only hardens the opposition when it questions a commander's authority. 1'0 get a req ues t to the front office. it must be very brief and through the proper channels (military chain of command).
