Th e Ponderosa Ranch Inn , 14 miles east ot Lancaster, is one swinging place to have a Picnic Hare Scra mhl es, once or twice a month during the summer months at least. Ther e are ample shade trees, picnic tabl es all the fresh runnin g wat er you c an us'e and (ge t thi s) an air conditio ned loun ge and rest auran t , run by Al and L ouise Co l t zau, both of whom " li k e bikes ." L ouise t old me she used to ride bikes a few years ago , and I want to say that t he welcome mat was hung out i n fu ll co lors . Sound like Up to wn ? Well , frie nds i t i s and yo u ca n jump on t he ol d sled and rid e out th rou gh th e co rra l gat es int o so me of th e best dese rt country yo u ha ve ever see n. • Wait Fo r Doc At Jl :00 a.m, t he banner dr opped for the trail bikes to ' sta rt the day . A t 12:00 Noon tb e big bi k es and 250s wer e t o leave , but there was a slight d elay . Doc Bryce came in at that tim e and asked if they would bold up for a f ew minutes to allo w him t o get into his gear . It s eems that Doc call ed his ex change Saturday night from th e dese r t and had to go back to L os Angel es t o deliver a baby . So off he went and stayed up all night with his patient, th en came rolling back to th e P ond ero sa at noon . F or any one who wants t o rid e that badly, we can wait a f ew minut es. At 12:30 p.m, th e bann er went down and this wa s one of the best fun run s I hav e had t he pleasure of rid i ng fo r some tim e. Ther e was somet hing out t here for everyone . Across th e st retc h t oward t he smoke bomb ( about thr ee mile s out) the s and wa s like beach s and . On e thin g, if y ou got off it didn 't hurt. The trail jumped i nto a was h that was out of s i ght : flat , hard, and four t h gear, full- lo ck s lides and not one roc k or bad place in it. Man, it was wild ! Out i nto the booni es and ac ross t o a s mall roc k hi ll t hat wasn ' t even dang erous , down t o a r oad and for 2'>2 miles it was pure heav en. It put t he j ump at Ascot t o s hame. Ther e were wh eel -walking who op-de-doc s , and one could get car ri ed a way doing some of tho s e spectacular thin gs that y ou dream about. Up to th e t op of a rid ge, into Check-two and th en a Qui ck right turn and down an off-c amber s andy J eep trail that was a co mplete blast. A c ross some mor e booni es and onto a fiat-out road that parallel ed a bi g alfalfa fi eld. Then woosh! ri ght into a big mud hole about exhaus t- pi pe-deep ( w ate r run- ofHrom th e alfalfa fie l d) , and ac ross the des ert t o the borne c heck . That ' s the way it went for t hree 12- mi l e l oop s - not too l ong- j ust ri ght for an open Sunda y eve nt. The le ad was t ak en by Hus ky- moun t ed Bob (Mac) MacLau ghlin an d he held i t After th e run , riders co uld wa sb up und er a co l d wat er tap and sit i n th e shade of th e bi g grove of elm t rees. The trophy presentati on was held at 4:00 p .m, and there was aliv e band to pl ay music f or a danc e afterwards , all free , comp l ime nt s of Ja ck Ross and his friends who hel ped hi m pu t on thi s run . And a beautiful j ob they did. An othe r run will be held at the same pl ac e On the t hird o f July, and eve ryone wh o wa nt s to ca n stay ov er l or the F ourth. Trail bikes start at 7: 30 a.m. and t he 250 s and bi g bikes get going at 9:00 a.m, So come early and beat th e heat , and stay late--Iike ov ernight. T her e' s ple nty of camping are a. One thi ng , th e prop rietors tr eated us lik e br ot hers and as l ong as we recip rocat e in k i nd, I 'm su r e we will be wel come in t he fut ure. It is a wond erful place t o ha ve a weekend of f un. Trail Bi ke Repo rt By' Vonna fl al ey All I can s ay is , wow ! wha t a run ! The co urse was a " fun " course-- 12 miles ar ound , and th e trail bikes made one l oop. The first one t o fi nis h was our gung-ho " D esert Dai sie" Jan Dit son, and second plac e went t o Yale Ca mp. Jan ha d a good l ead on Yal e. Third place went t o Ros emari e Mar tino, and fo ur th was Gerald Taylor. Fift h one in was Sand ra Termin , s o out of the fi rst fiv e fi ni shers, th r ee wer e gi r ls . One of th e ri ders made th e sta tement that i f Jan was ever t o star t riding a 250cc , he was going t o Quit ri di ng and st art helping in th e pits. Jan is ce rtai nl y getti ng good . Jack Morgan was hav i ng bi ke troubles and finish ed 8th overa l l. He co u l dn' t keep hi s machi ne runn i n g. but he did finish. Jack Ross gave t rophies t o t he fi rst five finishers and t hey really' earned i t. I tal ke d t o a few of the ri der s as they' finished , and everyon e enjoye d the run very much . I hope we can co nt i nue to have these event s , as a good time was had by all . Turn that proved the undoing of about fi ft een riders (th ree are shown below) was an uphi ll left·hander. ..
