I' ve al s o s pe nt some time in ver bal battles with th e A.M.A. I' m goi ng t o take on a new little function i n my co lumn; I' m goi ng to criticiz e an article writte n by th e Manag in g E dit or. I know how much Mr. Clayton , the Editor of Cycle News, is int er ested in authe ntic articl es and s tatements made by hi s cont ri buto rs , and someti mes he is s o interes t ed in bring in g thi s t o the foref ront tha t he has held our c ol umn bac k to make s ure it was a uthe ntic . In th e first plac e , I' m not crit ic i zi ng Mr. Neil Kee n' s stat ements in t he articl e co nce rning th e MRl . 1 hold a mutual res pect for Mr. Keen . I fee l he believe s in what he is tryin g t o do and is hones t and s ince re in his efforts , whic h is more t ha n we can say about a lot of ot he r individua ls we have come in co ntact with in th e mot orcycl e ind ustry. Howev er, I would like to clarify a few s tatements made in the intervi ew co nc erni ng t he MRI' s s tand on pr ofessional ' ra cers . He s ta te d " AMA racing is the only s ucces s ful sport i n the world that forces ama te urs to co mpe te a gainst profess ional s." This i s not true. T he second lar gest sp ect at or sport in the United Stat es is automobile rac in g. In automobile ra ci ng amat eur s may compe te with expe rts or professi onals wit h no dis criminati on against the expert or profe s sional. A good e xample of this i s t hat in the Sa nta Barbara road rac es, yo u may see s uc h world famous dri ver s as Dan Gurney pa rticipat ing in a California Sports ca r ra c e which is a non-pr ofe ss ional e ve nt. Th is is also done in ot he r forms of automobile racing. Bes i des this , th e A.M.A . doe s not forc e Amat eu rs to c ompete with Experts. The Amateurs do it on t heir own and in many cases hav e beaten t he Experts s ound ly, which , I ca n imagine , gives the amate ur a great dea l of s atisfa ct ion . Mr. Keen a lso stated " we feel th at a nec es s a ry part of professional co nditions is a n ad equat e ins uran ce c ove rag e and med i cal fac ilit ies , This, you re ali ze , is a l uxury not afford ed nonprofessional co mpe titors by a n ins ura nce co mpa ny. " Now, t his is not t rue . The A.C .A . ha s profe ssi ona l and non- profes s i ona l events , and we hav e always afforded medical insuran ce to th e riders . And , i n the futur e , any of our s a nct ione d c lubs that wish m ~ri ic al i ns uranc e for non-protess ronal events may obt ain this insuranc e by foll owing some s imp le s afe ty rul es and regulations . T he A.F.M. t hrown non- profe s s iana! e vents and they af ford the riders medica l insuranc e. So, this s tate ment is c ertainly a fallacy. T he only thin g I ca n see , whi ch Mr. Ke en ca nnot be bl amed for , is that if a pr ofe ss io na l ri der is not allowed to participate in non-pr ofessional e ve nts , it would have a ten dency t o inc rease the gat e of th e paying s pec ta tor t o the prof ess io nal e ve nts. But, Mr. Ke en , since you ar e goin g out and pushing so hard for Mr. Agajanian " th e s a vio r of profe ssio nal mot orcyclin g" • why doesn' t he give you th e sam e break he giv es the sprint cars , the midget s and t he st ock ca rs which is 40% of the gat e? T hi s is s omething you've been working for for a long tim e whic h I feel you are entit le d to becaus e of th e tr emend ous s how the rid ers put on at As cot whi ch is one of the mos t s uccess ful weekly motor cycling ev ent s in t he United Sta tes .
