W ayne Head was not to be headed in t he thundering Novice 650 class. He fought close ly with Dennis Brennan before cinching the win. Fitting capper to the day's deli ght s was the Open Expert class which fea tured the aforementioned Jo e Castro taking over early in the main and clinging s moothly to the lea d while behind him, les s fortunate racers battled handl eba r to elbow for second and thi rd. John Lamant o moved aggress ivel y thr ough the pack after gettin g a slow start. only to unload coming coming into the main s traight ' while duel ing Bruce Anders on for second. When the fina l fla g fell, all we could say was " Whew! We'll be back next week for more of the s port you neve r get tir ed of, when an other club hosts the s cramble rs at Fremont Raceways. ORANGE COUNTY SPEEDWAY • • J ohnny Balaa m, las t year's number two high point man , returned to the winning ci rcle in the 250cc mai n on his Har ley Sprint. In hot conte ntion was Ric k W oods , last yea r's ACA rookie of the year, on his Ducati. J ohnny has been riding since the beginning of th e season but just has n't been able to get t he Harl ey to perform properly , but Wed nes day night put toget her the ri ght combination in the Main Event . Rick Woods was unable to win the 250 main but did capture t he 250 Trop hy Dash . The 100cc M ain Eve nt and Tr ophy Da s h went to #98, Rus s Robins on of TT fa me . Rus s has rea lly gotte n the hang of short track racin g and has been consiste ntly pus hing the leaders in the last couple of weeks. Seco nd pla ce went to Rick W oods, pushed by Gary Cal kins on a new 100cc Yamaha. The 50cc main was won by Dave Smith on a T ohatsu . Second place went to Bill O' Neil l. So, far Dave has jus t been unbeatable t his year in the 50cc class. SOUTH GATE RACE WAY Dave Smith and his brother M ike still continue to dominate the 50cc class on their T ohats us, Dave winning the T rophy Dash and the 50cc main and his brother finishi ng second , with Keith Mashburn taking third. T he 100cc mai n went to Gary Calkins on his Yamaha, followed by Rick W oods . Ric k was not quite able to get by Gary in the Main Event , even though he was succes sfu l in winning the 100cc Tr ophy Dash. Th e 250cc M ain Eve nt was won by Rick Woods , after P res ton Pet ty fell on the second to las t lap. Pr eston, after being absent from short trac king for the first part of the season, ca me back and easily won the 250cc Tr ophy Dash on his Greeves, but just going too quick in the 250cc main, drifted too wide and fell , letting Rick W oods move from second into first spot and Lee Stumpenha us moved up into second.
