OILERS COME THROUGH • .. .. • By Bob Goodi ng Having lostthe us e of their scramble s track, the Oilers M.C. of San Diego were fac ed with a sancti oned eve nt scheduled In less than two weeks , plus their remainin g event s of th e year. This would seem a large problem Indeed , but not so with strong leaders like Don Mathews and Al Finan directing the red-hot club, along with many oth er hard working members. Th e Oil ers have already opened their ne w scrambles ar ena. a nd I for one was "stok ed ." Their new location Is In Imperia l Bea ch , not far from the ol d site but with e ven greater poten tial. Six ty acres near the freeway, plenty of wat er, completely fenced. and-get this-two tra cto rs with grading equi pment , plus a water tru ck all donat ed by the Swiss Farms Dairy loc at ed adjacent to th e track. It's no wonder the Oil ers sa y, ·Make Mine Milk." The chargers open ed the day with David Alonna winning the 90cc Novi ce main on a Suzuki wit h s o-coo much hors e pressur e no one was eve n near. Nln ety-c c Exp ert Chu ck Bak er ha d no easy win to day as he was challenged in two of his mot os by DRvid Ham. J ef f Willis , sometimes known as " free fall fir e ball" captured the 200c c main. Th e 250cc Novice boys allowed Fred Ange lo to win on a real good looking Bultac o; a very clos e second was Rick Eckhart on a sharp new M esa, just nos ing out ont J oe P hillips on who was out of the groove doi ng big slid es on his Honda . Red Clemo ha d the 250cc Amateur again , and I believe I see "Expert" written all ove r him. Experts in the 250cc class were all on two-strokes, with Bill Sil verth orn the winner of the moto-cros s .H owever, Da ve Ham. who was s ec ond, fail ed to wait for the official resu lts, stopped by the srgn UP table , collected first plac e trophy and headed for home one hundr ed and fifty mil es away . As the pos t-race controve rsy grew, howev er, t he origina l purpose of t he e ve nt became so mewhat c louded. It is t he Sprockets intention to choos e a diff erent recipient e ach ye a r for profits gained from their benefit c ha mpio ns hip. Th is ti me the proceeds went to the South ern Sierra Council of Boy Scouts of America. A c he ck for $1,272.80 was presented to the Scouts for expa ns ion and improvement of their rec rea ti onal fa cilities, among other proje ct s . SCrambles program to be held at Dehesa on Sunda y, June 12th. Rules ar e as follows: 1. Contestants must be ove r thirty-five years of age . 2. T hey mus t not now be racing in competition. 3. Must have A.M.A. ca rd but no Sports Committee card. 4. Machine mus t be 100cc or less. 5. Helme ts and at leas t one pie pla te (number plate) ar e required. Fir st plac e man will receiv e oneJ a rge bottle, second place man will re cei ve one medi um-si zed bottle and thi rd place man one small bottle (Gerit ol).
