By Maureen Lee A Scrambles columnist wonders - do we all ca re enough to stand togethe r? How would it be if all the professional riders got togethe r and rode the Benefit for Ron Nelson at P rado P ark. May 29th? A number of peopl e havin g influence in our s port think this Is a great Idea and a real .chance to show Columbus tha t the rank-and -file A.M.A. members will stand up for thems e lves when step ped upon. Because these peopl e do have influen ce - so me e ven within the A.M.A. s truc ture - their identity has to be protected. But there is a definite movement locally to get this idea going. Listen in on the " grape vine" an d you 'll hear about it. It is: Get all the profess ional Amateur and Expert riders to back up one of their own, Ronnie Nelson, by riding the Benefit for him. It will help two ways. F irs t, Ronnie will benefit as en try fees Cor the Expert clas s are being donated to him, and second, It could break the local deadlock. The riders who have the coura ge to stand togethe r on this thin g may los e their lic enses , yes - BUT FOR HOW LONG? There will be a scream of prote st from promoters una ble to promote a race with no big names to bring In the crowd. There will be dee p rumblings of discontent from big distributors and manufacturers as they los e a lot of their adv ert is ing punch. Do we sanction re vol ution? Not al ways - but In this case it co uld do some good. Let's get this rule suspended C or the res t of the year, a nd In the meantime , ALL work towa rd a more logical writi ng of the regula tion rega rding professi onals ridi ng in sportsman-class competition. Cha nge it to a workabl e thing - not a discriminatory action against the profes s ional that thi s rule is not completely enforcea ble has a lread y been proved. Skip Van Leeuwe n has his license back. Th ere is an old saying truly cov e ring this situation- "Unlte d we stand, di vided we fal l. " If our riders do s tand up and fig ht , let' s not have a ny in the group who grow chic ken-feathers at the las t minute!
