Cooperation and Conflict It 's amazing how much intrigue and behln d-the-scenes activity is going on concerning the ban ning of ride rs Irom the forthcoming F .I. M. sanctioned event at Rivers ide. We hear ge nerally through the grapevine that the even t is a good idea, but if a motorcycle event is to be held at Rivers ide it sho uld be under another sanction than ours. So, instead of doing eve rything possible to promote the sport an d gi ve motorcycling a good prestige rac e on the West Coast, some people se e fit to do eve rything they possl bly ca n to dis c oura ge rider s from participati ng in t he event. We would like to tha nk the A.F. M. for ca ncelling the ir May 22nd event in favo r of the Riverside e vent . We feel this was a noble gesture on their part and when the date was set, we truly didn't know It conflicted with their date . This Thursday night, May 19th, the riders will have their first opportuni ty to practice on the new short track surface and on the following Thursday will be the first A.C.A. event. Iilformatlon can also be obtained re garding these events by contacting Mrs. oapaltte, We feel we've been very fortunate in having some inclement weather this month. The Fire Marshall has granted us another Irvine date of June 5th. Following our previous policy, a new course will be laid out which will be a little shorter and not so rough on the riders, and one that a water truck can be driven over which should eliminate the dus t in the back part of the course. By Roxy Rockwood JOSEPH BUEGELElSoEN CO GOooj'VaR It neve r ceases to amaze me how many things can occ ur i n one week. My last wee k' s column was ve ry sho rt and had little to say. A great deal was cut from it an d this added to its brevity. We s ubmitted an open letter to Mr. Brunda ge, Dist ric t 37 Refe ree (AM but the Editor A) of this newspaper saw fit to censor this letter. Various reasons were given . such as Mr. Brunda ge would n't do this, and I had no grounds other than rider's heresay in s ub mit tin g s uch a letter. Of course , I take a dif ferent stand on this: I feel that if I wish to su bmit an open letter to the paper then the editor should print the letter, since the letter was from me to M Brunda ge a nd was well r. doc umented. (Ed. note: Mr. Cooley' s open letter to Mr. Brundage appears in its entirety on pa ge two, as does Mr. Brundage's reply. Our reason for delaying Its puhlicatlon was to allow both sides to be heard.) 1. unde rstand from the edito r that the lette r will be read to Mr. Brunda ge a nd he will be a llowe d to writ e a rebuttal , so my open let ter and his rebuttal s hould. appear side by side , if it ever does. I am pleas ed to say that si nce the writ i ng of my ope n lett e r to Mr. Brunda ge he has retra cted his statement to s eve ral of the · rid ers , so the lette r accompli sh ed its purpos e. W do e not wis h to become i nvolve d i n a ny kind of le gal conflict with the A.M.A. nor do we want to instigate anyone becoming involved legally with the AMA , but we do fee l the ride rs should be Informed of their rights and we do not feel the AMA has the ri ght to infringe on these rights. Bes ides that, we under stand the AMA is having enough difficulties among their own members without our doing anything to agitate the situatio n. For general Information, the A.C.A. Is interested In member clubs, and any of the AMA clubs wishing to hear about our association's program should contact us. This little offer should gI ve some of the clubs and members quite a leverage with the AMA sports committee. We hope you get what you're fighting for -the right to have a say-so in your association's rules . It appears that one of our basic philosophies that a rider has the right to participate i n any event or with any association he wishes has caught on and is beginning to spread.
