Ge orge W Yerk e s, both on Bultac os , fought it out with Kirk McD owell on a HarleyDavidson. Thi s was probably t he first tim e out for Kirk on a "bi g" lightweight , and he ha ndled hims elf very well. It was odds up as to who would e ve nt ua ll y win with Yerk es a nd Walker trading back and fort h and McDow ell breathing down t heir nec ks . It ende d with Ye rke s fi rst and McDowell sec ond , one bobb le in on e mota moving Walk e r back to t hi rd spot. Jackson Came Through Heav yweight e nt rie s being li ght , they made up j ust t hre e classes , Novic e , Amate ur and Exp ert , rega rd less of engine di s pl ac e ment . In the Amat eur c lass, Triumph-mounte d Rory Ran dall an d Ale x C hrzanowski on a Honda e ac h made se rio us bid s for the overall le a d , but for one reas on' or an oth er , co uld n't hold it and it was Bruc e Jacks on on hi s 500cc BSA twin who won. The E xp e rt c lass winne r wa s T riu mph-moun ted Jimmy St e ve ns and a nother T riumph ride r, L a wren c e Shoemak er, took the Novic e cl ass . T he Novic es were wild , with one mota being re-started twice du e t o cr ashes i n t urn one . The only waiting pe riods were ca us e d by the ambulanc e goi ng out , as it was a day whe n crashin g see med preve lant. (Res ults on pa ge 12) • • • • • HILLTOPPERS frompage 1 Lots of littl e bikes at Bay Mare. First to compete were the 100c c trail bikes running heats , s e mi and main. Hayward M endenhall rode his Yamaha to an easy win in a heat and repeat ed in the main. Denby Dailey and Alfred Guzman finis hed 2 - 3 in the main, both ridin g Gileras . In the large (31 ent ries ) 250cc Novice class , the competit ion was tough, hut Greeves rider Bill staats, after winning his heat, led the mafn all 10 laps to finis h firs t. Noel Cobbs, running next-t o-las t on the first lap, brought his Bulta co through the pack to second pla ce on the seventh lap, and finished in that position. Close 250cc Go The 250cc Amateur moto-cross , also a toughie , was won by steve Cole (Greeves) with two firsts and a second place finis h. Close behi nd was Happy Hopkins with one first and two seconds on a Bultaco. T he aft ernoon' s program of big bike raci ng started off with the 350cc Amateur mota-cross. Hondas place d first and second with, Al Fox running a nd J.N. Roberts runner-up. 500cc Novice winner was T erry Davis who took first in his heat and led the main all the way ahead of P at Ca llahan. Behind thes e two the dueling was clos e with Bob Mikalski moving up from s ixt h place to finish in thi rd. All rode Triumphs, Matchless rider Ron Wilson came through in the clos e Open Novice motocross , 's coring two firsts and a fifth t o • outpoint Gene Smith who had a first and and two thirds. All the Novice clas s es were large, and the big bike starts , in partic ular, were s omething to watch . T he first turn was s harp uphill -downhill -uphill , full bore, while turning 180d egrees and into a narrow section at the top. Crashes At A M inimwn Despi t e the demanding nature of the course crashes were few. and e ven the scoo te r-smas hing big- bike Novices " got off" relatively uns cat hed. One tangle, which could have been bad due to the absence of a flagman, was handled by sp ectators who quickly removed the debris and directed traffic . A total of 35 events were run off during the day, and the cycles were loa ded and homeward bound well before s unse t. (Fesults on page 12) 5
