The Open Class all ran togehter , Novi c e s, Amat eurs and Expe rts c ombine d, with C. H. Wheat on a Tri umph fi ghting up to fi rst place ah ead of an other T riumph with Larry Wilbrow aboard . The 21 in ch class had th e best infighting of t he day with Jack Co ody and T erry White, both on Hondas, scrapping tooth a nd nail through the three moto-cross heats. Coody won th e first tw o, White took th e thi rd . The 500cc Novice class fo und Tony Simon riding th e Honda which c a rried Monte Darling around for a while . Simon showed tremendous form on this machine and th e Main was a ding-dong between him and Matchless-mounted John Smith. S mith got in front a c ouple of times , but th e Honda appeared faster at th e right points on th e track, all though perhaps not handling as we ll . The 500 Amateur-Exper t c lass was all (gue s s who) Jim Hunter's . Dan Kelly, also on a BSA Gold St ar, took over s econd. Ken Sparkman, a n Amat eur, was really holding down third plac e when his bik e qu it ri ght at th e end of the third mot o, doing him out of th e over -all position. Drag Ne~s insisted we run last Saturday night. It was their prerogative to request ttiis , so we dul y showed up at the appointed hour at Lions Associated Drag Strip in Wilmington with our weapon under our arm. Drag News' champion Paul Maddox arrived while our bike was hidden from view, " I just wanted you guys to know, we' re runni ng fuel." He confidently warned. "That's all right," replied Cycle News' champion just as confidently. "This is our mini-bike" he said, producing a Honda 250·powered, smaIlwheeled bike. "And we're running pump gas." ObViously psyched , our opponent wheeled his Briggs & Stratton to the line and pulled the starting rope. Ad Manager Gil Brown revved the Honda and Drag News, hearing this, redlighted, off the mark, losing the race ri ght there. Brown calmly engaged 2nd gear, smoked off the mark, caught third and pulled a steep wheelie past the other mini -bike (might as well give the fans their money's worth ). Needless to say, we won by many l engths. C~cle Ne,ws ~ishes to thank Dan Doyle of Wilmington Honda [or lending us their duellIng Jron (they also supplied the mini -bike Drag News used. Easy to see where their loyalties lie). And let that be a lesson to you, Drag News. This ye a r' s Tiny Bear Run was laid out on 100% vir gin territory, wit h s even laps of nin e mil e s each, ove r some re ally rough ground. Rod Montgomery (P reside nt of the A.F .A.) p romises th at next mont h's cross-cou nt ry ra ce will be muc h short er a nd easier for the 50cc bike s to fi nis h, and wlll try to di vide the ride rs into novice a nd ex pe rt classe s .
