Th e crowd , pleased by Gene' s so ar ing jumps and I'm -gonna-do-it det ermination , roar ed th ei r a pproval of his first TI win as an expe rt . F ollowin g Hammer in were J ack 0' Brie n, Jack Simmons , Bob Bail ey and C hris Draa ve r, Simmons had ea rlie r won the T rophy Dash. Amateu r honors went to J a c k Konl e, also a first-time Main Ev ent winne r, a nd Gene Ca nnady won the Novi ce 8-l a pper . It loo ked like some kind of fantas ti c s pli t-second t ric k a ct , and both ride rs played it that way. As P ett on s lowed and pull ed off t he track with hi s unex pected c argo, Cancilla ga ve him a bi g hug a nd wa ved to th e crowd, as if it were a ll pre-arranged . T he crowd went wild , al most una ble to believe t hei r eye s . They had witnessed a one- in-a-mil lion phenomena , and both rid ers a re to be comme nde d for thei r e xce ptio nally cool reac tions i n an emerge ncy . Th ey each rec overed t hei r machines , remounted and fini shed the race. But P att on, ac cepting co ngratulations on his " trick act" a fte r the ra ce , was heard to re mark, "Good show but I missed the Main. " MISTY DAY AT PRADO By Red Ludford It was mis ti ng a littl e , and continu ed to do so for ab out two hours , but it sure made t he Gophers ' tra c k s tay in good co ndition. Only two accid ents occurre d all da y. Once , when th e sidec ars wer e running , two of the m ran off the track with one of the passenge rs fallin g out of th e s idecar, but he got up and rode again. T he ot her time , a solo bike ri der fell off i n a co rne r but although getti ng run ove r he was up ri ght away. Th e li ttle bike s ran with Da ve Ha m doin g a lot of winni ng. Anot her rid er who showed a lot of c lass was J eff Runya n, eve n if he did do a had " endo" on the start of t he thi rd mota . Harry Stankey also did well , s o did Dal e Smith, an d Lar ry Ha mmond won one of his mot es. There a re s ure gett ing to be a lot of 2S0cc Novice rid ers . J ohn ny Ca rbone took the win in t his rac e , wit h T im Eyc k coming in for 2nd . And so wen t the little ones . The sid e cars were fi rst in the bi g bikes and did a fi ne job. T her e were four of them this time . All the Amateur and Exper t races were mota c rosses , so everybody got to ride a lot . It was T. White ove r Jack Cood e in th e 21" Novice , and J ohn LoHot too k the ~OO Amateur by winning all th ree motos. The Ope n Amat eur was close . between W ood and Sprague , with bot h of them having good a nd bad luck . Anoth er cl ean sw eep took pla c e in the 500 Exper t ev ent by P . Brown. P. Da le and J. Sel s on were right in the re behind him. Bill Riley did it in the Expert Open with Wilburn second a nd "Fri endly J oe " Robe rts co ming thi rd. Novice time , and there wer e se ven novice eve nts i n all. Aft er t he heats a nd semis , it was Anth ony Simon in the 500 Novice Mota all th e way. T he Open Novice went to J . Cr ouch . The California Gopher s put on a very nice s c rambl es ; th ey had enough men to cove r eve rr spot and job.
