COOLIES 6 COLUMN ' Last week opened t he A.C .A sho rt track raci ng at Oran ge Count y Speedwa y. There was a good turnout of riders and the one-tenth of a mile track was fa st and ,smooth as usual. Get ting off t o a good start this y ear was l ast year 's . rookie of the y ear , Rick Woods, winning both t he 100cc trophy dash and main event. Still dominating the 50cc class was 113 Dave Smi th, It looks as though this c lass is slowly dying out fo r lack of i nte rest by th e riders. We hope that ~ore peop l e with 50 to 55cc machines who care to participate will do so. Thi s IS a good class t o begin racing in, with lots of exci te ment and fun f or t he riders . .Jo hn Bradford ca me out and pr etty well domin at ed th e 250c c class. He easrly won th e trophy dash but was beat out i n t he main eve nt by a new rider to California, Pa l Gosch from' Omaha, Nebra ska. Pat was on a new Harley-Davidson Sprint, wi th Bradford fini shi ng sec ond and Ivan Oden t hi rd. A new course has been laid out and some of the ' spe ed areas have been changed to insure taxing of bot h the riders' and the machines' ability. We were very pl eased with th e co mments and participat ion at our las t event and we feel some slight im provements we have made in the co urse will mak e it even bet t er . T he course has been lengthened a slight bit and several j umps hav e been add ed. We' ve also been assured that a wat er truc k will be on hand to help keep down th e dust i n the spec t ator area. A s always a P .A. sy ste m, con cessions and sanitary facilities will be availab l e. Remember, entries close at 10:30 a. m. for both large and small bikes. Insurance and ambulanc e will be made availabl e to th e ri ders. Also, because of t he warm weather, the leather rule wi ll not be enfo rce d, except there will be no open sl eev e or har e arm riding permi t t ed. U.S. NATIONAL OPEN Tbe F .f.M. -sanctioned u.s .
