Jim Nlch o lson pick s up the narrative: April 21, 1963 - Sunday AT THE RACES , • • • Last night we drove out to the town of Moor where the races were to be held. Just Mark and I went- Jim had to work . By the way I didn't finish writin g for Friday because th e lantern ran out of gas while I was writing , a nd Jim started writing before I got a c ha nce to finish that day . Anyway, last night at th e show we broke open ou r homegrown supe r duper two-wee k-old ap ple cider which we had bought jus t before we hit Oklahoma City. We got talking about hard cide r an d how it was made, and . how Mark used to mid 'his neighbor's shed for his homemade brew. Then was th e time we decid ed to make some ourse lves . We pu t som e mis ins in it. Last night when we open ed it it sm elled pretty powerful , ' bout 190 proof, but disappointedly enough it didn't even make us a little bit high. I even c hug-a-l ugged a half quart wit h no effect. Anyone reading this he re log of our wild. exciting adventu res over th e United States might get the impression that we a re lazy, s ex minde d alco holics, and they a re wrong. W are only no nnal e American te ena ge rs from we ll cultured families tha t li ke to get t he most a nd finest t hings ou t of life, and that is in my opinion exactly what we a re doing now. Back to Sunday , we got to th e tra c k a bout nine . Nobody was ther e. It looked li ke a rea l good course when I ....ralked around it . except for a jump t hey had in the co rne r. Mark an d I practiced for a while. The run was pu t on by a road rid er club and th ey alm ost d idn 't let Mark rid e beca us e he di dn 't have his AMA card. I rode my heat rac e a nd got fourth and didn't get to ride the main event. It s ure did get me mad, because my bik e was bar ely running in th e heat race but I did get it running good afte r I fixed my high tension lead wire. Mark rode a nd won hi s hea t. He ca me from third pla c e a nd passed a Harl ey for the win. I didn 't think he would win th e main event but he di d, by getting off to the front position at the first turn. Several guys had money be t on him. It was a real good race . We met a lot of ride rs a nd they were real fri en dly. After the race we cleaned up the truck and went to another lake. HOW FAR WILL THE BAT BIKE TRAVEL BY MIDNIGHT, JUNE 15? • T April 23, 196 3 - T ues day • • • Jim got up a nd went to work . I went loo kin g for a job. I got one the fi rst place I went.
