3 CYCLE NEWS NOW IN ITS NEW BUILDING Now we are inslalled in lur new, enonnous building al &417 N. Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach, California 90805. Our old office, wilh all ils silenl echoes of Ihe good limes pul in Ihere, will be converled II a residenl-gallery for Ihe display of painlings by arlisl Carl Barllell (exhibils by appoinlment), T.C. the officecal survived the move in good shape, as we all have, and now we pause in our busy manipulalions 10 prlduce anolher issue. Growlh and expansion are all very well, bUI in our Ihankfulness for Ihe increasing prosperity Ihal molorcycling is giving us, we have nol losl sighl of Ihe imporlanl job Ihal remains 10 be done. Wilhin lur flexible boundaries (approximately, the west) we at CYCLE NEWS discover enough vital happenings to fill 1& newspaper pages four times a monlh. That's the space equivalent of a 128-page magazine every IIlGnth. But CYCLE NEWS is not a magazine. It is not meant 10 be kept in binders for its lasting value. It is meant 10 be read Ihis week and Ihrown away when the new one arrives, or cut up for gaskets, or used to lighl camp fires. It is what is happening now and a lillie of what's going to be. Like the growth of motorcycling, it is improvised as we go along. It is the free and independent voice of California and we just want 10 reaffinn that it will centinue 10 be, beller and beller. The sport and business thai we love is growing like a healthy tree. And we, as nurturers of Ihat organism, recognize certain limbs as mainstems, reaching for the sun. We will encourage them. Olher branches shoot out Ihat are doomed to be sapsuckers. These will wither. It will be a long time, three or five years, before Ihe Iree we see will bear fruit. We plan to all be around to taste u. We want to savor the sight of a motorcycle racer earning as much money in his career as a lop-flight baseball pitcher. We would like 10 see national motorcycle registrations top the twenty million mark-- with seven million of them in California. We'd enjoy watching cycle riding become America's number one spectalor-participant sport. And we'd love to see the faces of those who read this and snicker, in five years. Because as Ing as we avoid making too many mistakes anything is pllSsible now for a force as vital as motorcycling. A lot If dead wlod may yet have 10 be pruned away, and new paths of growth are still tl be charted. CYCLE NEWS pledges its besl efforts to serve molorcycling as the only immediate communication fo r Ihe sport. To Every voice desiring 10 be heard , CYCLE NEWS offers both ears. To every message deserving to be said, CYCLE NEWS will continue 10 be a voice. Below: Amateu, winne, Bodelle th rills with Eddie Wirth and Jim Nicholson running wheel to wheel for four laps and three turns. They left the door open on the final bend and that was all Chris Draaye r ne ed ed to slice through and grab the win. T anne r, Lawwill and Haaby ag a in won their re spe c ti ve he at races for th e third s t raight wee k in a row. T he final was too tor rid for a re cord number of e xpe rts , Guy Loui s , Wirth, Dra ay e r and Dick Hamme r all got orr on differen t lap s, trying to keep up wit h the le ade rs . All wal ked away without inj ury . New amateur ace P e te Bode tte again turned ba ck the yellow plates in both the he a t and final to run hi s win s tr eak to four straig ht . Bodette was winless as a novi c e in ' 65 but app ears to be well on hi s way this year , now that he has moved to the bi g BSA. H-D ran one -two in the novice final wit h Marty MacDonald leading P hil Todd to the fin ish line. These two could be the new winning combination in the " BOO division now that both have three full weeks of 1966 racing experience behind them . The late laps found them racing only each other with the remainin g ten riders Quite 'a ways back battling for the show position . ( Re s u lts on p a ge 12)
