PHONY FINISH LINE Th e pits were ad o•.•ed with pretty blue flags funneling into a grid iron affair, with a hu ge banne r hanging up saying FINISH . Rid ers assumed that this was the finish lin e. Actually, the fini sh was l~ miles farth er up the road. Bob F err o sai d that it was in the back of his mind to pass Gary Conr ad on the dirt road comin g in to the pits instead of t aking the chance out in the rough, becaus e these guys were really rna k i n g it and Bob was on Gary's fender. They stopped racin g at the fals e " finis h" , fi gurin g it was allover , and stroked it to the last check, which was the real finish lin e . This is not to tak e any c redit away from Gary Conrad, he ear ned and darn well des er ves it for winning the Nation al on a 250 again. Th ere are over 100 trai l riders In today's des er t compet ition. Th e fir s t loop was thei rs , and for s afety they were held up for fifteen minute s after the bi g boys got away . Th en they had their own banner drop , and were off. The fir st rider in to finish was David Williams on a Honda , and to prove that these little guys really go, he was runnin g a bout 95 over-all . at the end. He'd caug ht and pass ed about 200 of the m. (Remember -they had wait ed fi ftee n minu tes after everyone else had got away) . Th e National had be au tiful weather , about 90 degrees, and just enough wind to keep the dus t from s ettling. (Results on page 12)
