One was for the ride rs. who found the jump pretty hard to take in practice. A lengthened approach put them well into 3rd gear over the launching ramp. resulti n g in some un believable nose-down. frameflexing landings, especially among the novi c e contingent. A few of t he lads just couldn' t keep the ri ght angle over it . The experts seemed to find the right li ne after a few tries , but they didn 't like it either. A. M.A. officials decid ed that too many were having troubles by the look of things , so after practice the top was sc raped down to try and help the angle. but all through the night moto rcycles sailed treetop high while riders tried ·to keep them down whe re the traction was . Biggest thrill was Dan Haaby ' s win aboard a BSA. It was his Urst main event IT win as an Expe rt . M ost of the crowd had the likes Eddie Mulder or Dick Hammer tabbed to win , but Haaby did a beau tiful job, " inning it awa y from the re st of the field , and in s e cond and thir d wer e Gene Romero and Dusty Coppage on T riumpbs , with the rest of the fiel d n THRIUER trailing along be hind. Haaby bird-dog ged the ir rear w h eel s for 8 laps be fore powering b)'. Coppage and Romero both showed fi ne riding style as they beat out Ascot's best TT riders for their s ha re of the $1800 purse. T ra vis P et ton & Jack 0 ' Brien locked handlebars on the start. both going down hard , but both got back in for the re-start and finished the rac e. The Novices had started the evening off as usual , with John Sprague on his Bultaco adding to his winning streak, givi ng him eight-i n-a-row. T he wildest crash of the night occured when Mike Lithicum hit P hil Brown' s rear wheel over the jump and did a spectacular endover, knocking him out for a few minutes. Bultaco-mounted Brown barely winced and rac ed on to thi rd place . Th e Amate urs s howed some wild riding. rough and fast. Tr iumph-moun ted Ji m Be rry took top h 0 n o r s , but was closely pressed by Rich Thorwaldson , who fell off t w ice in the attempt to ca tc h Berry .
