YlHITHER ENDUROS? ? B Y CH U CK C L A Y T O N - to muffle or not, th at is the ques tion South ern California Des ert riders are loudly protesting rec ent rulin gs by th e Dis trict 37 Sports Committee which s eem to favor endures. Kee ping to a fine s c hedule , whic h dock s you poin ts for arriving at a destination too l ate is not every cy cle .c ompetitor' s cup of tea. Cons equen tly, th e Committee composed of repres entati ves from South e rn California Sportsm en c lubs vote d to award separate poin ts for enduros . Hitherto , if yo u wanted to earn a low ridin g number i n the des ert, you had to win enduro poi nts too. Now yo u can be #1 in the de s ert without ever winding a watch. All you -have to be able to do is finis h firs t , the devil ta ke the hindmos t. Neve rtheless , many des er t rid ers enjoy enduros too, be cause t hey a re a test of the mind as well as t he man and machine. and as long as th ey don't hav e to mai ntaln a s peci al built bike jus t for enduros, and anoth er one for des ert wailing, t hey will continue to ri de both kin d' of event. Lately, however , so me enduros ha ve had to cross or us e public roads , and this means all-out desert bike s , with out muffl ers , lic ens es or any le gal e quipment , are in eligible to compete Some clubs li ke the J a ckrabb its do lay out th eir enduros without touch in g a road . F or t his reas on, rid ers fee l that th e de cision to re qui re or not requi re mufflers , li ce nses , spark arres tors, etc ., s hould be left to the dis cretion of the promoting club. With Cyc le News to s pread the word , wheth er le gal equip ment is requi red or not , th e confus ion which plagued this a rra nge me nt i n th e past can be elimin ate d . Anoth er problem, which will no dou bt be so rted out in a futu re competition c ommittee meet in g, is the number of desert and enduro points eve nts on this season's Distri ct 36 calendar . W n enduros were he divorced from de s ert affairs , it was deci ded th e two types of events s hould not run simultaneously. Shortly there after , Open s undays and Ea s ter Sunday were set aside s o compet ito rs co uld spend those day s wit h their families e lsewhe re ot her than at the ra ces . Res ult is , the guy who rid es dese rt 100% and nothing else , is going to ha ve a few less weeke nds on his ridin g calen dar. Th e so lution propos ed by mos t dese rt riders we have talked with is "run desert events th e same days as enduros and le t the riders take thei r choice ." Then . clubs co uld requi re or not reQIlir e le gal equ ipment, and enduros co uld exis t s ide by s ide wit h de s ert date s. The Sports Committ ee s eems to fear that this would s ound th e death knell for enduros . Clubs would not want to waste the e xt ra effort it takes to s tage a good enduro, for th e sake of a hundred or so true blue enduro types. W say nons en s e ! e Enduros are a fin e s port for new riders who want to ta ste th e spic e of competiti on without alterin g th eir road bik es very muc h. Up to now you had to ha ve a desert sle d to e ven fini sh one of our roug h, Southern Ca lifornia enduros , Maybe if the cl ubs hav e to attract new competition enthusiasts to fill th eir entry li sts they will do as they al ready hav e in the de; ert make senarate courses for trail bikes and make the ove rall co urse less than impos s i ble for all but the firs t few starters to complete . Manufacturers and dealers would lend more support to enduro promoti ons if the winning machines bore a strong res emblance to the bread and butter model s they sell for the road. If mufflers and li cen s e plates are all that's requ ir ed . put ' em back on (or better yet, don't tak e ' em off). If we have to go the whole rout e wit h headlights and all that jazz I know a dandy wa,y to rig up a tempora ry set that is OK by th e authorities . Now, if som e mathe matica l reader will sp ell out a simple scoring sy s t em s o promoti ng clu bs can ta lly up enduro sco res in a hurry , Cyc le News will pay a pretty for the privilege of publishing it.
