By a process of eliminatio ns with handicaping , a tap bike was picked f rom each division. Then came the run for rna n ey! M. L. Disharoon went home with heavy pockets after a final run against Leroy W yman 's 350cc Honda. Wyman was given anum ber of feet head start on Dish's Harley but the dis tance was not enough to keep the spor t st er from getting to the finish fi rst. Considering all of the larger di s pla cement machines . Wyman's success in attaining runner-up is indeed great! Fifty cc 's of a Honda CR bike was the smallest bare machine present . Tony Nicos ia was the owne r and rid er. He is a fairly rec ent arri val from the east coast and as a re sult of seeing what our competition he re i s like, plans on building something larger. Mos t likely to be a 250cc Suzu ki dragster . I IRWINDALE OPENING In an ideal central location . many spectators were treated to the fir s t day of bikes in competition at Irwindal e Raceway. The top fuel bike honors were taken by Don Mc Evoy's TrilDDph. The bikes speed was be low normal but the elapsed time of 10.57 was great. One week ago Don H a r r i s tu rned 10.51 at Fontana with his 650. This would be a great 2 out-of 3 match race. Mc Evoy vs, Harris . Gas burning Harleys s eem to be holdin g all of the honors in this division. First Disharoon at Lions and now at Irwindale, Bruce Millar won the pot turning 13.20 - 101.69. Bill Fleming and Triumph ar e a familiar sight in the winn ers circle. Bill really turned a great 12.8 -1 E. T . in winning top street. Boh Michael s is ba ck with us ag ai n aft er a tempo rary ret ir emen t for modifications to hi s well k no w n "Bl ack Knight" Harley. First time and on fuel , 11.37 - 12-1.00 mph. there are going to be some great things from this bike . maybe even next Saturday as Irwindal e goes to night drags. Congratulatio ns, Mr. & Mrs . Butl er for a well run opening day. Y TH E OTH ER SIDE Each column (write leaves me with a guilty conscience , because 1 cannot ' mention every drag racin g competitor. bath the winne rs an d " the other side" . Mayb e trail ri de rs don 't care about so meone trying to do them some good. or maybe the posters didn't get out in time. I hope it's the latter. because only two (2) riders showed up for Dan Watkins' first trail holiday. Now I kno w fo, a fact that over around Li ttle Rock (which is a favo rite trail rid in g area and just one of many places frequented by hund reds of riders) in the past the Sheriffs new overhead in a $50.00 0 helicopter with a bullhorn announcing. "You people down there are on private property and we will give you fifteen minutes to clear the area. " This i s not the kind of way to spend Sunday wi th the family on fun bikes , being run off by one law enfo rcement agency or another. P eopl e up north are having their problems with some clubs doing all they can to kee p fun bikes out of their s t ampi ng grounds. F ortu nat ely we ha ve a fe w peopl e in Southern Californ i a who are taking it on themselves to try and do something for th e trail bik e rider, by getting pe rmission to use properties for properly organized events . Th e Forest Ran ger s hav e said they will not interfere wit h an organized event, but th ey ar e going to start getting after th e unorganized ones from her e on out because of the fir e hazard. If you people who have trail bik es have never beeo to an organized field meet and pok er run, you have no id ea what fun yo u're missing. Watkins' next event will be the third Sunday of ne xt month and ev ery month ther eafter . (see the Cy cle News calendar) You can eve n stay out there ove rni ght as ther e ' re ampl e campgrounds .
