40 SCRAM BL I N AROU D By Maureen Lee Who 's walching Ihe slere? On Sunday . it appe ared that all of the Sports Committ ee cam e to Prado en masse. le a ving us wonder in g who was keeping tabs on th e goin gs-on at othe r scrambles th a t day ? Anyway. th ey wer e al l the re chec kin g thin gs cut . from P residen t J ean Carter on down. It was good to see them checking th e bi g bik e practice out so thoroughly. tu rin g ba ck th e lightweight riders who wanted to ge t out and rid e wi th the bi g boys. However good a rider you may be , and however fast yo ur 250 (or wha te ver ) is . it's s till a lightwei ght and s houl dn't be out th er e trying to bomb arou nd wi th the 500 and ope n class machines. A couple of guys thought they 'd play it smart. so goin~ down to th e far end of th e pits . th ey sneaked out onto the track when no one was looking (s o they thought). T he res ult was, they wer e disqualified for th e day and los t th e points they'd earned in th e mornin g lightwe ight races. Some system of enforcing rule s at scram bles is surely need e d or we may j ust as well forget the whole thing . Lately. some clubs ha ve been doing a (ine job ttying to stop some of the horsin g around that 's goin g on like bik e- sw app in g, but th er e are other clubs who just seem to c lose their eyes. Either everybody upho lds the rul e s or we may as well th row the book aw ay . Competition Committee, le t' s have an orrtcial at every e vent to insure the way our races are run . Re feree s-forthe-day s ometimes ge t confused. At a recent P rad o Park ev ent. what went on at the sign-up booth was enough to make your hair stan d UP on end . I'm not going to s que al On anyone . but there wer e a couple of pr etty well-known rid er s involved in swapping A.M.A. an d ridi ng number cards so they co uld get to ride more than once. It was kin d of funny at the tim e. and neither of these guys fin i shed hi gh enough to queer up the points for anyone el se. But. the fact 'is they we re deliberately breaking some rul es of lo ng standing be cau s e they knew they were goin g to get away with It. Actually, th ey co ul d have lost thei r A.M.A. cards in the deal. and where woul d that have l eft them come Ascot tim e ? Up in the s t ands. that's wher e! The other s ide of the story was sbowa a coup le of weell.s ago when die Grip sters had a run there that !mY club would be proud of for efficienQ ' ..d organization , and nobodY got away wid! nutlin' . Th is even included . we bear, the winner of die open expert cl ass . and a couple of cuys who ....s t ha ve thoudlt nobody co uld spot a twostroIle in the 21 in ch class . So , the re we ar e . lots of problems and pre bably no way of really s ol viog them. until a lot of riders begin to give a hoot when someone else is d oing more ch eatin g than the rul es al low. FORDYCE FEATURES CYCLE FLICKS Anyo ne who has seen Skip F ordy ce ' s marvelous motorcycle emporium at 14th and Main Streets in Riverside would probably agree t hat he is a skip and a jump ah ead of everyone else whe n it co mes to merch and isin g motorcycles Faced with di minishin g s ales owin g to in cr eased competition and th e Vi etnam scare , Fordyc e borro wed a pag e ri gbt oUt of Cy cle Ne ws and ins tall ed a de lux e movie theater in his s to re to attract old and new c ustomers.
