Monte Darling and his 450 Honda got a ferocious drive out of the hole and got a considerable lead over the pack. .Hm Hunter, caught in a squeeze at the start, _ set out after him aboard the Fulbright Goldstar. and though he had to pass several riders to do it. J im finally caught and passed Darling in the tum after the jump. Anyone who ever watches race strategy knows that's Jim's favorite tum [or passing. The Sportsmen M.C. had a good starter on hand on Sunday in the person of David Ham. It was unusual not to see David out on the t rack. but he 's bee n around eno ugh that none of the again carrying home trophies [or both the 50 and 100cc classes. The 250cc expert class- [ell to Lonnie Walter. who outran hard-riding Steve SCott in the process. Later in the day . Lonnie switched to a big bike and took a fifth place in the Open Amateur Main. As usual. the novice big bores were the last ones to get time on the track. with John Simon taking the open class. The track surface is still pretty bad in a few places. but until the undersurface dries out some ·more. there's not much the Gophers can do about it. although they are trying. Only one race is scheduled for April . but there are four in May. By May 29. when the Antelope Ramblers throw their benefit [or Ron Nelson . the course should be just right. (Results on page 40 ) 250 competitors got away with anything on the line and those who deserved it penalized. The open expert class looked like an Ascot TT with Dusty Coppage . Bob Bailey. Jim Berry and Bill Riley coming to the line for motocross heats. Unfortunately. Coppage went down while leading. and Riley. in trying to miss him. got off too. putting both of them out [or the day. This left Bailey, Berry and Jim Bass ey (out on a new triumph) to have it out for top honors. with Berry eme rging on top .
