At 9:00 a.m. on a beauti ful morning , the little ones got the day orr to a good start when Tony Mason fiew around the tr ack to tak e the combined 50cc Amateur-Ex pert main. That was 0 n l y th e beginning. K eith Mashburn bounced around the track j us t ahead of har d riding Kirk McDowell to open the f ans' eyes and win the 100cc motocross. Th e show continued to improve right on t hrou gh the 25O's. Bob Lount started things rolling for the bi g bi kes as he came on to wi n the 21 in . Amateu r motocross. The racing wasn 't over yeti 10 the Amateur Open Mai n , Gary Bailey dug around the track In nne form to win the event. Th e :lOOcc Ex pert races spoUighted Chuc k Mln ert on a BSA Victor th at bad survived nearly every macazine's road test. The new slDpe still bad al l the pOwer needed to wID a bard fought victory from Monte Darling and bl s 4:10 Honda. But the r i d e r of th e day was Dus ty Coppage. who showe d a beautiful style i n ai l three heals to come out on top and waik away unchallenged with th e Open E xpert motoc ross . U you missed thi s race, you missed a wonderful show. Th e Hawthorne Gophers put on a good event . (Results on page 12) CARlSBAD ACA By Maureen Lee Th e n rst real scrap of the ACA road races at Carlsbad on Sunday came In the 100cc main. Barry Harriman got away n rst, building UP a nice I e ad , but Yamahamounted Jeff Pasternak who lately has been tops In that class , set out after him . Finally he caught Harriman. and by going In deeper into the tum at the end of the st raight. he passed him, and then t he rac e was all Pas t ern aks' . The :IOc c cl ass H trophy and purse went to Mi k e Capallte, wbo c ame down from his duties as announcer to ride that OIIe race, leavin g promoter Wes Cooley to han dI e the mike for him. Th e 125- 175cc class also showe d action. Chi ef Gal braith. Steve P ederson and Bru c e Shaw al l ran very closely toget her trying to decide t he three runner-up positions . Pederson tinally got ahead , only to crash into t he hay bal es piled In f ront of the pit fence, putt in g him out for the rest of the race although he was unhurt . Winner was Ralph L e Cl erc q on his Ducatl who l ed from start to finish with a beautifully smooth rid e. Th e 2:10 class fell to Steve Gibson and hi s Yamaha. but the two having most fun were sc rapping for 6th and 7th plac es. John Fox on a Harley and Jerry Stanl ey 011 a Honda . both road-racin g for the first time, fou gbt I t out the whole race, wlt.h the announcer calling attention to thell ridi ng. On the last lap, St anley passed Fox but was re-passed before he could gain an advantage, and the y tonk the checkered nag within feet of each other. Happiest ri der no doubt was the win ner of the production class rac e for the bi g machine s . On a 1955 T riumph Bonn eville. young BUI Holst went out and blew off a l ot of hot machinery . Th en after the day was over, with his gi rl rriend on the pillion . be rired up and rode th e bike bome, pro ving that there are such thin gs as true product!on machines Instead or th e kind that just compl y with the legalities of the class, At 51_ , Hol st had even admitted that he didn't think he coul d do any good , but be wanted to ride anyway. Th e Open GP class had a disappointing turn-out as a l ot of the us ual stars In tha t event were off at Daytona Bea ch. However. r acing was good and t he sheer speed of th e big jobs kept the spectators interested.
