Some 600 peopl e did just that Sunday , March 13th. Two hund red and sixty-eight riders enj oyed a typical Sunday 's race thanks to the sandblaster's M.C . Th e course was last , safe, and had three loops , 25 miles around for the lightweights and big bores . whil e the trail bikes (aliSO 01 them) had thei r own separate course of thre e ten-mile loo ps . The trail bike co urse was dominated by the Morgan broth ers , firs t Frank and then Jack. but In the end Jack won It . Th e leaders in the bi g bike class on the first l o op were Dick vtck , Larry Ber gquist and Mi ke Patrick. On t he second loop Ber gqu is t was ah ead , leadin g Vick by only yard s , but at the fin ish Ber gquist was over a minute ahead . Don't tell me that Lar ry doesn ' t rid e hard! To make t he day complete , one has to have the ne ces sary har d knocks an d one pe rso n found his . Li ttle Bobby F erro was force d off the nar row trail on a hi gh ridge and wen t boundi ng down Into a box canyon. He co uld n't ge t back up onto th e course , so took the only way out , down the canyon. Soon he came upon a he rd of sheep and an irate Basque she eph erde r who did n't sp eak English. Howev er, th e language barri er didn 't Interfere with communi cations as his clu b waving left little doubt In Bob's mind that this guy was very unhappy about bi g T riumphs bugging his woolles . ell. Bob hightailed it out of there , W dragging his s le d th rough thr ee s t ran ds of barbed-wi re fe nc e in the process. which promptly put him out in north ov ersh oe count ry (in ot her words. lost). But bein g an old desert hand he found th e co urse again and came back in abo ut 80th and to add insult to injury . he got lost on the s econd loop. Bob the n dec id ed that it just wasn't hi s day s o he proceed ed to pl ay for th e res t of the race .
