But one setback will be suffered when the BSA distributorship heads south. Since BSA came to the United States it has been distributed to the West from Oakland. via the firm headed by Hap AIzi na. A similar operation headed by William J ohns on served Triu mph In P asad ena. Now both the Triumph and BSA finns ar e to s ha re headquarter s in Duarte . Both rinn s are unde r the co nt rol of the BSA manufacturi ne: group in Englan d. Califonla 526-"55 With the continued growth of population around San Francisco , the attrition of off-the-road playgrounds has inc reased. Where ten years ago dirt rider s on an outing would mount up In front of their garages. now most embark in cars with their mac hines in tow, so much has the number of highway miles to thei r des tina tions risen. San Francisco itself once offe red hills for a n evening's rid e . McLaren Park, fo r Instance , provided many a rid er ' s first non-pavemen t v e n t u r e. And by the time motorcycllsls l earned what was afoot. it was too late to organize any etrective OPIlO ition. At the prese nt time the re ar e only two Iocattcns close to San Fran ci s co where the futu re of dirt riding for fun is reasonably assurred. One is In Oak land , where the county P ar k and Rec re ation Department has for years staked several acres of park land with a sign re ading " mot orcycles only. " The other location is in Richmond, where the Richmond Ramblers Motorcycle Club enjoys the use of bills surrounded by shipping and 011 faclllties. A few years ago the 0 a k I a nd playground was ad equat e, but these days it can get . mighty crow de d on a Sunday afte rnoon, both with moto rcycles and spectators . So me ride rs hope the area will be e nlarged. The futu re of di rt riding ror fun near met ropolitan areas may lie solely in such moto rcycle parks as those In Oakl and and Richmon d.
