MORE GEAR ING fOR GO Every too th on the rear sp roc ket accounts for approximately 3 to 5 mph top sp eed or .50 mph per 1000 rpm, dep end in g on the tir e radius and your indi vidu al machi ne . F or drag racin g it is bes t to hav e co nfi de nce -an d gear for a 's peed slight ly (one tooth or 3 to 5 mph) faste r than your cl ass record. Your cyc le P it Di rector will glad ly te ll you what the record is if you don' t know. Remember. the more teeth on the rear sp rocket th e s lower yo ur t op s pe ed, and the more on the counte r s haft, the greater the top s peed. Every change in a counte r s haft tooth is equi valent to a change of 2 or 3 On the rear . BY varyi ng these figu res in computing gearing you can cont rol your bike ' s performance very well. On T.T. tr acks, ma ximum sp eed pos s ibl e on the strai ghts is abo ut 80 mph, s o by j uggli ng the figur es you can gear for exact ly that speed on th e top end . street ridin g is a diffe rent hors e (oops! bike) and col or. Your gearing s hould hav e you runn in g .. UP on the camW at your av erage c ruis in g spe ed in 4 th or 5 th gear to avoid lugging th e engine and downsh i fting too much, unl es s yo u get your ki cks that way.
