Mulder , th e SlOO.OO-s-minu te man at Lon g Beach Arena, has orten le d the Ascot 100 and th e y early 50-lap national but bas always been shot down for one reason or another. The filst three in this one get the honor of lining up in the back row, row e le ven, for the big one. Th e start of the 100 gi ves two wheel followe rs as big a charge as car lovers get from the s tart of the Indy 500. In th e previo us fi ve events held no rider has been nuts enough to fall off in the early laps . That is all except one , that was Dickie Newell last year and he has not ridd en an As cot 'IT since. They say Dick is stili recov erin g from the shakes of watchin g 32 other guys see how close th ey could mis s him by as they roared onto the back s tre tch . The AMA took a dim view of his crash and tacked a three di git number on him this yea r in hopes tbat he would get madand NOT try again . Don' t bet on it . This is the rac e that makes amateu rs wish tbey were novices again. A few always make tbe li neup but have abou t as much chanc e of winnin g as I do. Th er e are a lways a fe w riders who plot to run at about half s peed s o they can at least be around at t he fini sh. One ye ar a rid er we will leave un-named made ove r 20 pit stops-but he st111 finis bed. One oC the top hal f-mll ers ried the grind a few years ago and soon c ame in for a pit stop . Th e c re w really had wrenches flying and were soon ready to go. Th e F ri day night ace was lying down behind the pit wall and to ld them , "Don't call me, I'll call you- when I' m ready. " You have to go wit h a guy like Dorres teyn. One year he won the rac e and was later out in the par kin g lot on a lightweight doing wheeli es . No wonder we never get any out-o f-s tate ride rs to enter the annual big one . All are remind ed to wear makeup as the race will be vi de o-t a pe d for ABC "Wide World of Sports" and s bown someti me next s ummer. No blac k l eather jackets , please .
