Of course, Lion's 1,000 (one thousand ) dollars is at the head of the list. I imp lore cycle enth usiasts to patronize the dealers that have so generously l:iven the awards listed below. It is interesting to note that the recen t AMA event at Carlsbad women were allowed in the pits , even though Mr. Roekwood soundly wrot e in his column there would be no family gatherinJl: at the A~IA Sportsmen road race events. I understand the ride rs. who were mostly ACA members, refused to participate if their wives were not allowed in the pits . So in order to have the riders, wives were pe nni tted. \ Ve were amused to see tha t some of those zood old Cramwells (helmets), used by all international riders throughout the entire world, but nonnally banned by the AMA because the y are not "safe", were used. Simple a nswer W:lS if the riders had not been able to use their helmets, they could not have participated . The rigid foot peg rule was also waived, wh ich points up th e fact that the AMA can be flexible, at least in California, in order to have an eve nt, and tha t no protests or stoppage of th e race occurred because of ·these AMA rules beinq "viola ted". We hope tha t this is a sign of be tter thing. to come, such as ad opting rules which are acce ptable all over the world as well as in the United Sta tes. W e a lso filld it very interesting to read tha t road racing and big time road racing has finally returned to California. All this time we felt the writer was well-informed, but now we realize he really isn't. Road racing has been going on in California longer than anyw here else in the United States and has been actively run in California on almost a month-to-month basis since 1958. In fact , some of the her oe s of th e most rece nt Carlsbad event have oeen participating since that time. Bu t. of course , we don 't expect him to know about these events since he is only one of the outstanding authorities on motorcycling, We're waiting with very much interest to read his comments concerning short track racing such as "short track ra cin g has r etu rned to Calif, etc. ", since th e A.C.A. h as bee n promoting sho rt track racing at Orange County and South o;.te speedways over the last three years and it has been excellen t training ground for some of the 'riders before moving up to AMA-sanct ioned Ascot. But, of course , as in the past, these events really never occurred and only now are they here. .------------I • • • • • • Authorized Dealer ACCESSORIES PARTS 10427 P ra ir ie , Inglewood • 2 tOCAnONS TO SERVE YOU: 13200- 13210 Sa n Antonio Drive Norwa l k, Calif. 868-9997 2620 E.
