6 THE FINISH LINE BY' ROXY ROCKWOOD ( Continued from page I) like opening day at a nudist camp with so many sizes and shapes of cycles never before seen on a speedway. Th e promoters for Long Beach have a 190 piece band and a flock' of movie stars lined up for the opener. Some of the longtime winne rs on the dirt may look like novices and some first timers may look like old salts. The fans will be well protected for the indoor event. Nobody, including the offidais. actually sit at, track level. All will he up a deck and looking down into the track . Just like the Romans used to do when thev fed Chris tians to the lions a few years ·a~o. INDIANS ON TRIUMPHS This weekend- finds professional racing ge tting unde rway with one long standing event, the Ascot 11, and one first-timer, the indoor short track at Long Beach. Ascot features a new look at the old pros and over 100 new novi ce riders. The pit ca te storming starts early Sund ay morning. just a few hours after they clear the Long Beach short track. Around Ascot, ''T['' stands for Triumphs and more Triumphs. E x-Triumph man, Pete Colman, who now heads up BSA· in these parts. is trying to pu t together a little surprise for his former mates with two or three potential winners on his brand. Both riders scored weekly at EI Cajon and monthly at Ascot. Simmons again takes on the role of General Custer while the Flock of Tri umph • riders led by Mulder, Hammer and Van Leeuwen, are once again cast as the Indians-no offense to Sammy Pierce. Close to 200 riders already have thei r racing license in the state and without a doubt most will be on hand at Ascot this Sunday afternon.
