5 • Californians customarily modify their modes of transport to suit their particular fashion, but seldom is th e result more admirable than the Honda , 450 tha t we examined last week. It is the daily steed of Darrell "Du tch" .Fielder, and it is "used and abused daily" he grins. Work began December first and the job was finished as shown here, on the 31St. Dutch values th e result at $1500 including $250 worth of kustom parts and 45 .skilled hours. Dutch practices his mechanical knack regularly at the Alhambra Honda agency, where his machine, as yet unnamed, was built after hours. - When we took these pictures the type of front fend er was still undecided, and a tach and speedo nacel1e still in the works. The plush seat is the most outstanding element. It was upholstered by Cover Craft in San Bernardino. The tank is by Butts Mfg. Co: (who also make seats ) and painted starapple blue by Wil1ard Brewer, a perfect job, we might add. Rear fend er was bobbed and rotated to hike the fine lip up where we like to see it. Triumph air cleaners are coupled with scrambler fork boots to the twin carbs . The engine is virtually stock. The cases have been finished in black crinkle paint, a simple spray-can opera tion, but what a magnificent change! Keeping the changes subtle, with much attention to detail, the cycle flashes its chrome unostentatiously. The builder reports unu sual satisfaction with the worle of Pasadena Chrome Plating, where most of the job was done . Wh at are his plans for the bike? Dutch may enter it in the Cycle World show and use it as a prop in publicity photographs (for Dutch is also an aspiring acti ng stu dent at MGM studio ). But mainly it will continue to serve as his only trans portation, certai nly a bright way to go. i-s-\tsSe-R-t--8-Ei I I I Okay, please send CYCLE NEWS every week. : 3rd class ma il subscription I I I I I enclose $12.50 0 for. a one year first class ma il subscription.
