EBEL ING A vast parking lot littered with do g-eared copies of "Cycle News", em pty oil cans and wrappers from various edibles lay sil ent and dotted wi th pools of water Sunday morning. This was a com m on sig ht in California. The r ains rendered useless many a half-mile of especially formulated as phalt ; material designed to give vehicles traction great enough for never imagined spe eds in the shortest period of time only 1,320 feet from a standin g start. Just such ' an accomplishment was pe rformed Saturday night at Fontana. Don Smith, on a 250cc Du cati performed what many believed the im possible. With a great deal of precision engine w ork and a helping pu sh from 92% nitro, he turned a fantastic 12.54 elapsed t ime and 114.06 mph. Not just once ! He ran a second time to back u p what is now and probably will be for a long tim e t he drag str ip record. Congratulations Don, yo u must have the speed shifts down pretty good . Bob Michael had the "Bla ck Knight" Harley ou t for its second time on nitro and reaped the glory of to p fuel. He beat La w will and Ralph Wh it e in a w ire-t o-wi re, wheel-towheel battle. Isaacs' novice main event victory was not an easy one. He trailed briefly, led after a lap and outdistanced Ron Kruseman and Glen Mounce for the win. Kruseman ended up second in flattrack and TT points for the yearthe best all-around performance of any rider. Isaacs scored 2,114 poin ts this season to K ruseman's I ,I91- by far the biggest margin for any rid er in an y class. Both Hammond the Amateur and Isaacs the Novice, came here from Wyoming to master Ascot. in the Moj av e Deser t. Every m inute th ereafter four r iders set out on the long, hard J ackass Endur o u ntil all 290 entries were away. Th is was the largest turnout ev er in the 10-year -old annual Jackass run, sponsored by the F oothill Haw ks M.C. A mong the notables on the starting li ne wa s Montesa -mounted Dan Gu r ney, the famous 4-wheel racer, out to try his luck away from the pavement . The f irst loop fe atured a sand wash an d sand hili that se nt many a smallbore down with seizure. One gas stop was at Ballarat, an old adobe ghost town out of th e past. Only four m in utes to gas up and then out t o the second leg of the course--24 miles of hairy Panamint Mountains. On e section was so bad the average was only 3 mph. Then down a rock infest ed wash-straight down. Once past the point of no return at the to p, forget it , Char lie ; there is n o turning back. Heavy dust in the last loop caused many good ri ders to get off course and only 70 entries finished. Part of the course was tossed out when a checker had to take an injured rider to the hospital, leaving his checkpoint u nmanned. Despit e th e n oise of his big Harley, you could hear the r ebel yell as he w ent through the lig hts and w on t op gas at 11.92 and 109. Al though Bill Reutge n wo n the trophy in B gas on his 650 Triumph, he couldn't beat the South. Nothing seems t o stop Ed McDonald, and he w ouldn't allow it this time. .Top street w as his goal and 12.57 at 106 w as the winning score. Pat Owens broke the 14-second barri er which has haunted B street bikes for the past few w eeks. His E.T. was a 13.96 and 97.93 for speed. There was a wi nner in every class wi th the exception of C street, but none of the speeds were close to wh at is possible. At other places on the West Coast, drag strip activity is increasing. Dish aroon won 25 dollars plus a 15 dollar gift certificate in the E.T. brackets at Lions . A new Vincent is coming on the scene. Ch uc k Gruebner ran h is at San ta Maria, turned 12.66 plus 107.39. Same place and day Chris Bro w n d id a 14.86-90.27 with his Honda. At Half Moon Bay (near San F r an cisco) the best t ime w as turned by Ralph P en se and his Trium ph . 13.32-96.25.
