9 THE FINISH LINE By BOXY BOCKWOOD r • They'll put 'em in mothballs for another year Friday night after the 1965 edition of the California state championship race rolls at As cot Park. The season at Ascot started way back in April. We had to wait three weeks for the rain to stop before we finally got rolling-but how we did get r ollin g once the first flag dropped. All the top experts--except Ralph White-got through the season with little or no injuries and all-including White-will be out for the big one th is Friday night. According to rumors , there will be no big changes in the racing equipment next season so what was good enough t o win th is year should be good enough next year. The bomb doe s not drop until 1969. Th e crowd this year appeared to be divided right down the middle on the point champion Sammy Tanner. Half the fan s like to see h im win, the other half come to see him get beat. Win or lose , Sammy is still the first ri der to wi n the high-point title four himself up to the same pressure that won him the state title two years ago . Defending champ B1ackie Bruce has been con sistent but will h a veto climb to new heights to retain h is title. Referee Bert Brundage missed his first race since taking on the AMA chores at the start of the '58 season. Bert's mother died and he had Earl Flanders filling in for him Friday. Former racing star J im Da vis was in the press booth last week. A top racer many years ago, Jim was out from Columbus for the AMA national meeting. "Early two-wheelers, motorized, oft en are healthy, wealthy and wise." -New Proverb. Wise old author Floyd Clymer put together his latest book, A Treasury of Moto rcyc les of the World just at a time when it is badly needed-and also in time for Christmas . It is th e first authoritative story of the motorcycle in real book form. Much of the drama of our sport (or "way of life," if you prefer) is recorded only in the minds of pioneer enthusiasts like the author, but few have Clymer's encyclopaedic memory. Now that he admits that motorcycles not only used to be a lot of fu n, they still are, no one is bett er qualified to interpret the motorcycle world in b ook form than F loyd Clymer . Starti ng with th e present "boom", the author, assisted by over 500 pictures, recreates the saga of motorcycling from his viewpoint as an interested witness and participant in the drama since its beginning. The 240 page, hard-cover volume is Clymer at his finest and is destined to fill a long.vacant niche on public an d private libr ary shelves - C.C. 73200- 732 10 Sa n Antonio Dr ive Norwalk, Cal if . 868-9997 2620 E.
