Those headlines are quo ted from last Sun day's edition of the Long Beach Independent Press-Tel egr am, one of the better outspoken newspapers hereabouts. They make us wi nce, but the truth is there. Unless we fin d out how to make cycle riding safer, es pecially for first-year riders, we m ay have to cope with new laws t hat take some fun out of it for all of us. Finding how t o r ed uce accidents is the first step. The second step will mean act in g on this knowled ge. To quo t e the article headlined above: "A probe into the re ports of . . . motorcycle accidents shows the causes, in order of frequence as: Failure to yield right of way, excessive speed, improper turning, disregard for stop signs and signals, traveling on the wrong side of the street, failure to hand signal, improper hand signal, illegal passing, speeding into blind corners and following a vehicle too closely . . . Of the 20 motorcycle fatalities this year, compared to 15 in all of 1964. Seven of the victims were passengers riding tandem. "Orange County authorities lay the blame on 'the inexperienced driverone normally in his teens' '' . The article does not specify what new laws will be enacted to curb this toll of youth, but we can expect them to be restrictive. Some steps have already been taken to help people keep from getting hurt on their cycles, 'but the progress, if any, is too slow. Except for brochures and a dull m ovie, little has been ac com plished by us in the industry. Montesa Motors (Viva !) has an imaginative, effective safety campaign in the works. We would like to know of others. American Honda Mot 0 r Co., as often before, has the only campaign large enough to note. This consists, so far, of a movie, a brochure and press releases on safety, with heavy ernphsis on the brand that is paying the tab. And recently Honda's General Manager K. Okwnoto gave a check for $25.000 (twe nty..five thousand dolIan) to the Nanonel Safety Council to use as they see fit. AMA ROAD RACES FOR CARLSBAD RACEWAY NEW SUBSCRIBER WINS McHAL HAT SAFETY BRAINSTORM CONTEST The question is this: If you had $25,000.00 (tw enty-five thousand dollars) to spend on im proving the safety record of two wheelers, how would you say it should be spent? Would you have all the manhole covers in California knurled? Require side-view mirrors on all cars? Build a training center for new r iders ?
