J um ping the gun on H all oween a week, 69 witches and goblins, road riding motorcyclists in costumes, rode out of Laidlaw's Harley-Davidson Sh op in Sou th San Gabriel Saturday evening. They were bound for the San Dimas Canyon County Park where the Channel Riders Motorcycle Club were holding forth with fun and food. The route was laid out to accomodate lightweight machines and took the riders east to Pomona and then north to Highway 66 and the park. Drawing many startled starts from passing motorists, the gay costumes of the riders ranged from colorful Circus Clowns to a Sultan and his harem wife straight from the tales of the Arabian Nights. The most original costumes were those worn by Mr . and Mrs. Ken J ones of the Committee for Better Motor cycling who handcrafted a "robot" attire. Refusing t o spe ak and thus identify them selves, th ey kep t th e enti re gro up in suspense u ntil t he moment of un maski ng. Winner s of the Costume Tr ophies were beside the Joneses, S kip and Isabil Hetr ick who came as clowns. Dale Stoddar d took the sweepstakes trophy with a feminine disguise. Gallons of coffee and thousands of cookies awaited the riders as they arrived, reversing the usual offering of coffee and donuts at the start. Following the practice initiated on their East er ride, the Channel Riders conducted a "p um pki n hunt," the eight successful hunters who found the cleverly hidden pumpkins won sur pri se trophies. . Tw o clubs, the Monarchs and the Norwalk Rockets tied for the "largest club pr esent" with 10 members each.
