PAGE EIGHT - - - CYCLE HEWS TANNER (Con tin ued fr om front page) Nic holso n had n ip ped Edd ie Ham mond for his 11th amateur main event victory of 1965. Nicholson led all the way, but Hammond-who started on the back row --charged hard for 10 laps, finally caught Nicholson coming out of the final turn, got a tire tread ahead of him and lost by a half a wheel to Nicholson's last-ditch drive. The win moved Nicholson to within 42 points of Hammond in their battle for the amateur point championship. Vick Gathers Greyhound Hare Scrambles Win Me m be rs of the Gr.ey hounds M.C., a fairly new competition club, staged their first hare scrambles event last S u nd ay. Although no points were to be won, 55 entries turned out to ride four times around the 20-mile course. Eighteen finishers were led across the line by Dick Vick, the desert fox, riding a 500ss Triumph. Only little bike finished the bash, Ron Bishop on a 90cc Hodaka garnered himself 18th place. Sounds simple, but the racing was not over. Certain that it could be done again the N or ton challenged R u therfor d to another match with a side bet held by Mu r ray the pit director . The Harley took the d rag race all the way and collected the bet. Su re that it was just bad lu ck, Moulders & Reese made another challe nge and posted a wager. Rutherford cover ed the bet, went up to the li ne a nd once more shut them down. Care to try again fe llows?' That race action prevented a runoff for top gas bike and the purse was split between Bob Michaels (Black Knight) and Ed Rannberg. Rannberg was pushing a 250cc Bultaco mounted in a special light frame. With that small bore he defeated Wm. Gores 650cc Triumph and a 500 Triumph of Jasmins. Can he do it to the Harley? We will see it again ! Running on fuel Don Harris turned 128 mph with no recorded E.T. His closest contender was Don Smith turning 97 on a Ducati. No t much of a threat. Gasse rs start e limination goes at lions Sunday. At Lion's drag strip, Dish ar oon and Miller won 25 dollars each in the Saturd ay night E.T. brackets. "Dish" came ba ck Sunda y and ma d e his class win again. There is a fine example of machine and ride consistancy. Tr iumphs ran better this week. They m ade two runs, both w it h the slick lit up and smoki ng halfway through the quarter mile. R on K napp has the only Yamaha that makes H ond a drag fans shake. He turns screaming 13 second runs. In every sport there is a K in g. We intend to place a crown on McA voy & Whiteman, record-holders in fuel. But already the throne is challenged by Fontana's Murray & Cook. If McAvoy wishes to wear the robe, he will have to defeat them 2 out of 3 at Lion's . Murray and Cook do not think he can do it. Choose your seconds and set the date Don.
