Fastest overall wa s Alf Hagon (Eng.) on his Spartan 1,100cc "Leprechaun" at 10.50-147 mph. Ri ght on h is heels was Perry and Sc otty (USA) . Their Triumph double turned 10.53-150. Th ird overall, another Englishman, Neville Higgins on a blown Vincent at 10.74-134. Fourth , Murray & Cook, Triumph, 10.93-130. F ifth, Bob Loux, Triumph, at 11.08-128. Although rain was a bitter pill they all had to take, the English hospitality seemed to clear the sky a litUe. (Or wa sn 't it the bottom of the cocktail glass ?) Only one bike did not represent what the U.S.A . could do. ACTION 14.15 and 98 on a blown and fuel burning Honda? ! FONTANA Just as I said it would happen, it happe ned . Mu rray & Cook flew their bik e back, pu t it to gether and ran at Fontana. Th e com petition was also there. Four bi kes in the B Fuel class. Don Harris took Cook on a fin e hole shot bu t couldn't stay on t op. Cook m ade the w in at the lights. Second r ound of B Fu el matched Bob Sir K egian and Chuck Adams. Sir Kegian w as first out and Chuck li fted the front wheel twice in rapid succession, that was all Bob 'needed. Third and fina l round brought Cook and Sir Kegian to the line. Everyone w as surprised w hen Sir Ke gian to ok it from the m oment of truth on to the lights. In a usual fa shion Bob Michael and his fine Black Knight Harley ca me out with a w ell earned Top Gas trophy and mo ney. Bill Gore w on B Gas on a fi ne BSA. Yet was not as fa s t as Wes Chamberlin's Honda which took C class w ith an E. T . and spe ed w hi ch ca n be seen in the strip resul ts . The Harley-D avid son s seem t o be dominating. Dean Downum scored Top Stree t on hi s. F ollowing was yours truly in C Street and n ext Don Krantz on a BSA. A great inte res t was drawn to a Ford Flathead bike. One amazing thing is that it started by a conventional kick st arter . F ortunately or unfortunatly, the driv e shaft snapped before a top run w as made. The newest and greatest potentials in drag racing, from the dual en gine Chevy "Night T r a in" to Richard Vesco 's twin-engine 500cc Yamaha. "Ni ght Train " tore ou t a gate in the sta ging lanes and Rich smoked ten feet off the line , sw a pped ends and dumped his bike. Fortunately t her e was only slight damage to the machines. Driver and rider were O.K. Rich Vesco did turn the fastest gas class time, closely trailed by M. Disharoon on a Harley. Both took class trophies.
