Ten riders rolled their machines toward the starting line. Another rider, the first alternate, stood at the edge of the infield-his helmet in hi s hand, his tuner sitting next to him on his bike. The alternate looked intently at the ten starters, apparently counting them over and ove r aga in t o himself, hoping desperately he would find only nine riders - and an opening. Unlike most alternates, he did not walk away when he sawall 10 on the line and ready to go. Eyen when the starter gave the riders one la st look, nodded and mounted his stand, the alternate remained po ised at th e gate, straining to hear the ca ll that would never come. When the flag dropped, his tuner immediately wheeled the m achine back toward the pits. The alternate ri der stood still a few moments,. lowered his head, turned and slow ly fol lowed. On the track, Mel Lacher was on his way to vic tory over Eddie Wirth, Bill Ershig and Manley - hardly a championship field.
