After 5pm call (714) - 9 8 7 - 19 8 8 Does Sammy have the whammy on the rest of the Ascot r iders? It appears that way. Mert L awill falls off trying to catch him, Dan Haaby can only st ay wit h him half as long as he did the first of the season. Cal Rayborn is still in there pitching and gets closer and closer, but not close enough. One rider, Elliott Schultz, reportedly got so tired of trying to catch Sam my that he tore up his racing license last week and said he would never race again. Tanner now has another w in streak going for him and ca n set a n ew all time AMA half-mile recordwin total if he keeps it up from now until Nov. 12 when the season fades out for the winter months. Tanner is just around the corner from winning his 300th half-mile since he started back in 1956. Bart Markel is in the same spot and it is an unofficial race to see who gets there first. Old pr o Tanner still looks young enough to get in for reduced fares to the grandstand. He has been at Ascot since '59 and is a permanent fixture, leaving only to race at Springfield and once in awhile at other halfmile nationals outside of California. He's looking for his fourth highpoint expert award this year and if last Friday night is any indicationit's in the bag. There are rumors floating around that Sammy will be riding something other than a BSA next season. This is a strictly a rumor. With his record Sam can certainly dictate terms to some manufacturer and be highly successful. Tanner is a half m iler and a miler deluxe. That's about all of any importance that runs in this area. Sammy has shown year after year that he is the most consistent going in these parts. A lot of experts have come and gone that have taken shots at Sam- L ----r- -- - my and his wi nni ng ways. Sammy is still around. His '64 competition, Schultz, has thrown in the to wel to become the latest in a long line of pretenders to the throne. Haaby, Dick Hammer and Rayborn appear to be the next t o try. Lawwill will, also, when he finds a way to stay on the wheels. The old "B SA Wrecking Crew" is gone. No more Al Gunter, Stu Morley or J ac k O'B r ien. Neil K een is the only one of the four left. Don Hawley, John Gibson. Troy Lee and Brad An d res are also gone. All of these riders were around and running when Sammy blew in like the big wind from Texas. Tanner ap pears ageless. He rides as good , or better than he did back in '59. He looks just about the same. He is much ..riser than a few years ago when he would believe anything you told him as long as you had a straight face. Tanner has to p caliber equipment that only breaks dow n on the mile tracks. Ascot is a half mile. There is an outstanding crop of amateurs moving up to become the next challenger to Sam my n ext season. Eddie Hammond has already beaten Sam my this year but there is more to the story than just the win. Haaby cleaned Sammy good on opening night but the rest of the way has been all ~he big "T". Speaking of the big "T" it also stands for Triumph and the parade of TT riders that will be out this Saturday night . Eddie Mu lder , Hammer and the new "star" of the mile tracks, Skip Van Leeuwen, will all be out to score another for Pasadena. They were sidetracked last mo nth when Norton mounted J ack Simmons turned in a good ride to win. Prior to that, Triumph had not lost an expert main streak on Frid ay night and the Triumph boys .against Simmons on Sat urday night.
