R aci n g got off to a late start beca use many riders were delayed by rain in the surrounding areas. The first race was for the 50cc class I and II and the 100cc class. It was a 10-lap event, 25 miles, with H aruo K osh in g from Sa n ta Ana on a Suzu ki win ning Class 1. Class II winner was Bud J on es from S a nta Ba r b a r a on a T oh atsu, and the 100cc class win ner was Chief Galbraith from G olet a on a Yamaha. T he secon d race of t he d ay w as for the l25cc and 175cc classe s -- 12 laps, 30 miles. Ov erall w inner w as D ave A ll ee from Redondo B each on a l75cc Honda. Second pla ce wenf to Haruo K osh in o on a S u zu ki. Throughout the e ven t, Haruo and D a ve continually changed positions, with Dave winning by approximately four b ike lengths in the last lap. One of t he spec ta cular rides of this e ve n t was by Ralph Lee Clercq from Los Angel es on a Ducati. Ralph was unabl e to get his m achine to start a t t he be ginnin g of t he race, and a ll the riders h a d co m p letely g 0 n e t hrough turn one befor e Ralph was able to ge t his machine sta rted. In t he ensuing 12 laps, Ralph passed all the ot her r iders except the t wo front leaders and many ti mes t hrou gh ou t the race turned lap times faster than the leaders. The third event of the day was the 250cc class race , a 35-mile, l4-lap event won by John Buckner from La P uente on a Yamaha. From the very beginning, J ohn broke ou t in the lead, followed closely by Vic Vila and Murphy. J ohn continued to pull away from the pack and had a comfortable lead by the time he r eah ed the third lap. In the following la ps, Mu r p hy and V ila ran wheel to wheel, with second place changing several times. C lose to the end of the race, Tony Mur ph y and Vic Vila w ere forced to retire from the race because of mechanical difficulties, and S tev e Gibson and Gordon Jennings moved up into second and third p osit ions. Kim Kimball from Los Angeles on his Mon tesa, while going through turn nine, fell but was uninjured . The fo urth event was the l 2-la p pr oducti on class. T his race, unlike the other G.P. races, has a Le M a n s start, and the riders may start their m ot orcy cl es in any manner t h ey wish. O ver a ll winner was Wallace Sh a w from S ou th S a n Gabriel on h is Harley -D a vid son . . The spectators were thrilled by the acceleration the Harley displayed in the straightaway. Wallace showed tremendous skill in wheeling his Harley through the corners . Open class winner was Ian McKelvie from Buena P ark on a Velocette .
