But probably the happiest guy ar ou nd was hi s spons or, Dud Perkins. Dud has been backing Mert the last three years and it is finally starting to payoff. Actually, Mert should ha ve won quite a few more nationals this year, but one thing or another prevented it. Two years ago Mert finished 28th in the national standings. Last year he climbed to ninth. After leading earlier in the year, he finished fourth in 1965. . Much time and effort by Du d has gone into the climb by Lawwill. Excellent equipment, good money backing and lots of hard wo rk have helped Mert gain one national wi n and four second place finishes on the national circuit this year. Add t o this two main event wins at Ascot and it ha s been a great for the former' Idaho scrambler who TAKES ~ 10- ILE R ITA EW ~ , C RECORDS EE ••• ~ R S LS UT 1s1 2nd CH UCK PALMGREN TRIUMPH J1M NICHOLSON H.D. Now he has three years on e very size machine and every type track. A few more breaks this season and he could have been the grand national champ. From here on out, Mert will have to be reckoned with in any event. He has ridden against every top rider in the nation and has the seasoning that it takes to be on top. Were it not for a faulty oil pump he wou ld have won both m ile track nationals t his year. Mile tracks and road rac e cou rses a re his me at. b ut short tracking and half miles are r igh t behind. T he crowd was u p for the seventh straight year in Sacr am en to. Almost everyone was wondering when they will tear down the fairgrou nds and move over to the new location that will have a mile paved oval. There is still nothing definite so until some other word arrives plan on returning there again in '66. Ma y be b y that ti me the AMA will be runnin g on paved ovals. They m ay ha ve to as there are very few dirt miles left that are open to engine racing. F or you fans that did n ot get to Sacram en to, you are in store f or a treat as ABC WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS was on ha nd to vi deo t a pe the entire event. It will be shown in the ar ea on Chan nel 7 in the L os Angeles area in the next m on th or so. E verybo dy was also wo ndering why Bart Ma rkel chose to run a 19-inch fro nt wheel when 21-i nc h w heels are a must for mile tracks . But Bart has always been noted for doing the unusual. We have been w atchi ng a mateur Chuck Palmgren the last few weeks and he is the be st amateur in the East since the days of Ronnie RaIl. He just about broke himself last Friday night at Asc ot when he got sideways in front of Larry Rose. Both crashed but both were on hand for the final a t Sacramento. Palmgren appears headed for greater things in racing than his older brother Larry w ho is one of the East's top experts. Lawwill's parents were on hand from Boise to watch him in a professional race for the first time. B oth are college graduates. Mert gave it the old college try for awhile at El Camino but racing won out. He's a whiz at math but now spends his time trying to figure out ways to go fast er than the other guy. He also has a sister who is an a rtist a nd a brother who is a jet ai rline pilot. • < .. •
