IN THE WIND P34 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials Canceled T he 2020 Bonneville Motor- cycle Speed Trials have been canceled, the event another victim of Covid-19. "The heartbreaking actualities of the Covid-19 pandemic leaves us no other choice but to cancel the 2020 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials (BMST), an annual FIM World Records and AMA Grand Cham- pionship event," BMST organizers said in a statement. "We want to race, and we know you do, too, but the health and well-being of our Land Speed Racing family is BMST's top priority. "In partnership with the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), we've already been developing and implementing dynamic improvements to ensure the future of our sport for genera- tions to come. With the extra time that this postponement affords, we plan to do more to make the 2021 BMST, August 28 through Sep- tember 2, even more exciting and memorable. Our goal in the year ahead is to expand and build the Land Speed Racing community through commitment, focus and creativity." Along with BMST, the two other FIM-sanctioned international speed trials slated to take place in 2020 have also been canceled— the DLRA meet in Australia (origi- nally scheduled for March) and the Bolivia meet at the Salar de Uyuni which was to take place in July. The SCTA (Southern Califor- nia Timing Association) and BNI (Bonneville Nationals Inc.) are still moving ahead with plans to hold the traditional Bonneville Speed Week, though they remain aware that plans are uncertain. "After much discussion, we have decid- ed to proceed with our plans and we hope by August we will have a better handle on safety," read a statement issued by SCTA on May 7. "It is now the beginning of May and we are still uncertain, but pushing ahead. The volunteer lists are in place and entries are com- ing in. Safety and management is our top priority." CN Looks like no motorcycle speed trials this year. The Super Duke From The Ground Up W e're huge fans of KTM's 1290 Super Duke, having raced the first two versions at Pikes Peak and testing the latest machine at Portimao in Portugal earlier this year. The new machine is the most thorough overhaul since it came out in 2014, and KTM has just made this cool little video explaining what's been done. In it, they start with the engine internals and finish with a completed bike as parts gradually get added on. It's a good one-minute watch. CN
