hoosing the best ADV tire is always a
challenge. You first must answer the
question about what type of riding you
will be doing, and that can change with each
ride. Your tire choice can greatly impact the
performance of your bike for the pavement,
dirt or vice versa. And some rides will be
heavily tilted towards pavement or dirt, in
which case, you ideally want a more street-
oriented or dirt-oriented tire, respectively.
There are several 50/50, 60/40 options but
those are usually not great in any condition.
For this reason, if you can afford it, a second
set of wheels makes choosing the correct
tires a lot easier. For our Honda Africa Twin,
Dubya USA, which is in the business of build-
ing wheel sets using a variety of components
(from companies such as Excel, Talon, D.I.D,
Kite, Galfer, Motostuff and more) built us a
custom set of wheels designed to perform,
last a long time and, of course, look great.
For our project, Dubya (pronounced like the
letter "W") recommends Talon Pro Billet hubs
(which carry a five-year warranty) mated to
Excel Takasago wheels via Bulldog stainless-
steel spokes, and billet aluminum nipples. To
add some style, they selected red hubs with
black wheels.
