P104 50 Years Ago APRIL 21, 1970 LOOKING BACK We featured a photo of the top rookies of the 1980 GNC Championship. Pictured were Rob Crabbe, David Jones, Gene Church, Bubba Shobert and Jeff Haney... We also featured an interview with motocrosser Marty Tripes, who we said was the most "unexplained" MXer in the U.S.... Cycle News President Chuck Clayton invented and built a hybrid trike he called "Humbug," which we showed you for the first time. The Humbug ran off batteries and/or gasoline and could travel 15 miles on a charge. 40 Years Ago APRIL 16, 1980 A photo of Al Baker leading the way at the Viewfinders Grand Prix was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. Baker held the lead until John DeSoto (12) got around him and ran off with the 500cc Expert- class win... Dave Aldana was the week's winner at the Ascot TT... We reported that Sylvain Geboers won the 500cc Grand Prix Motocross Championship in England... We also reported that filmmaker Bruce Brown was working on a movie about motorcycles, tentatively called, "Any Sunday." (Left) James Stewart gets interviewed after dominating the racing action at Lake Whitney 20 years ago. (Below) Suzuki- mounted John Myers won the Gatornationals NHRA in Florida 30 years ago.
