LOOKING BACK
Our Yamaha XS850G test bike was pictured on the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago. We were impressed with Yamaha's torquey triple…
We covered Chuck Sun's win over Brian Myerscough at the Atlanta
Supercross… "King Richard" Burleson won the Stone Mountain National
Enduro in Georgia… We interviewed motocrosser Marty Smith who had
recently left his long-time Honda team for Suzuki… We also caught up to
road racer Dale Singleton and Elmer the pig… We previewed the 1980
Daytona 200.

MARCH 12, 1980
We featured an action photo from the Elsinore Grand Prix on the cover
of Cycle News 50 years ago. We had coverage of the race but still didn't
know who the winner was yet, and we didn't dare guess. Approximately
600 racers signed up for the race and an estimated 40-50,000 spectators
came out to watch… Flat track racing was going strong at Ascot Park,
where Skip Van Leeuwen chalked up another victory… We reviewed the
650cc Triumph Tiger 100.
(Left) In 1980, we
interviewed 1979
Daytona 200 winner
Dale Singleton
whose win was
made famous when
he brought his
mascot, a pig named
Elmer, with him to
the victory circle.
