LOOKING BACK
Brad Lackey was featured on the cover 40 years ago. We interviewed
the 500cc Motocross Grand Prix Championship hopeful who said he'd
be happy to win at least one race. Lackey talked about his championship
chances and his recent switch to Kawasaki… We reported that Harley-
Davidson had given Jay Springsteen an "indefinite leave of absence" to
"get to the bottom of his stomach problems."… Kent Howerton won the
Oakland Supercross over Steve Wise and Mark Barnett… Mike Hannon
won the National Enduro opener in Red Mountain, California.

Trials was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago to
accompany our special trials issue. We ran a photo from the latest SCTA
Trials competition from Saddleback Park… Our meet the rider column
featured 16-year-old motocrosser named Brad Lackey… We reported that
Mike Hailwood was coming out of retirement to race the Daytona 200
on a BSA Rocket Three… Whitey Martino battled JN Roberts to win the
latest district hare and hound at Adelanto, California.
