Former Dakar Rally win-
ner and FIM Cross-Countries
World Rallies World Champi-
on Sam Sunderland was look-
ing good at the early stage
of the rally, taking Stage Two
honors to lead the event over-
all. But high drama was fore-
cast for the Brit, who crashed
out of the Rally on Stage Five
at the 187-km marker, suffer-
ing five broken vertebrae and
a broken shoulder blade. He
joined another high-profile re-
tirement in the form of Yama-
ha's Adrien Van Beveren, who
crashed out on Stage Three,
suffering a broken collarbone
and a bruised hip.
Ross Branch made a small
slice of history for his country,
as the first rider from Botswana to
take a stage victory in the Dakar.
Branch took the honors on Stage
Two for the BAS Dakar KTM
Racing Team and finished the
rally 21st overall. His teammate,
rookie American Dakar rider Kyle
McCoy, took 60th overall. CN

Rounding out the top 10 for
the 2020 Dakar Rally was the
third Red Bull KTM of Luciano
Benavides, Monster Energy
Honda Team's Joan Barreda,
Monster Energy Yamaha Team's
Franco Caimi, and two stellar
performances by Americans
Skyler Howes (KLYMCIW Racing
Husqvarna) and Rockstar Energy
goal was to reach the podium. I
know I made some mistakes in
the first week where I lost some
time, and it was very difficult to
make that back up—especially
as so many riders were competi-
tive this year. The good thing is, I
felt good with my speed and my
navigation for most of the rally.
Unfortunately, even with 11 good
days, one bad day can spoil your
