OFF-ROAD
42ND DAKAR RALLY
JANUARY 5-17, 2020
SAUDI ARABIA
P74
The man who had one of the
most demanding and emotional
Dakars in recent memory is
Australia's Toby Price. Fully fit
after giving his injured wrist time
to heal properly, the two-time
Dakar champion was looking
good at the start of the rally with
the opening stage victory, he but
lost considerable time on Stage
Two when he opened the road
and dropped to ninth overall.
He would never fully recover the
lost time, and struggled further
when first he dealt with navigation
issues on Stage Three. He won
Stage Five, only to have his tire
come off the rim the next day in
Stage Six. Fortunately for Price,
Husqvarna's Andrew Short came
to the rescue and donated his
rear wheel to the Australian.
Price also suffered the heart-
ache of being the first on the
scene at Paulo Goncalves' fatal
accident, spending nearly an hour
and a half by the fallen Portu-
guese rider's side before Gon-
calves was airlifted to hospital.
Price's stage results for the
2020 Dakar Rally read 1-15-6-6-1-
11-7-3-4-5-3.
"I'm really happy with another
podium at the Dakar—every time
I've made it to the finish at this
event, I've got onto the podium,"
Honda's Jose 'Nacho'
Cornejo took an
excellent fourth
overall that included a
stage win.
