go in the race, Lawrence went down
when he lost traction entering a rhythm
section. He was up pretty quickly, but
the crash cost him over eight seconds.
Almost unbelievably, he still had a
few seconds to spare over Ferrandis
when he got back going, but Ferrandis
could see Lawrence and began to reel
the rookie in. On the last lap, Ferrandis tried to
shove his way by Lawrence a couple times, but
Lawrence was stubborn, to say the least. Fer-
randis finally solidified his hold on the lead with
two straightaways left in the race, but Lawrence
refused to back down and sent it through the final
section of whoops as hard as he could in an at-
tempt to find an inside line in the last turn and take
the lead back to collect his first-ever main event
win. Instead, Lawrence ended up dropping the
cuit Kawasaki) on lap three to run third
behind the Geico Honda duo out front.
Then, just before the halfway point, Fer-
randis got impatient as he was searching
for a way around Craig and made an
aggressive move to the inside of Craig
in the 90-degree turn after the finish-
line jump and the two came together;
Ferrandis laid it down on the inside while Craig
high-sided and was sent tumbling. Craig got up
limping, but okay (although he couldn't re-enter
the race since his handlebars were mangled in
the crash), and Ferrandis got up pretty quickly
and re-entered the race, having lost about six
seconds in the crash.
All of a sudden, the young phenom Lawrence
had a seemingly insurmountable lead, but there
was still more drama to come. With three laps to
