Scott Redding was not quite as
potent in sheer pace at this test
as he was in Motorland Aragon
in sixth, finding issues with his
rear setup that took some time to
improve.
Former World Champion Tom
Sykes placed seventh fastest
overall on his factory BMW.
The only fully 2020-spec Ya-
maha on show was ridden by test
rider Niccolo Canepa in eighth,
with the others on some kind of
hybrid machine, or some on a
more-or-less 2019 option. Baz's
team, for example, used their
own wheels and brakes, as they
have done all year.
Not resorting to a qualifying
tire, but finding several small
details that will help him in race
weekends, Chaz Davies (Aruba.
it Ducati) was ninth fastest. The
top 10 was rounded out by the
second factory BMW and new
signing Eugene Laverty, finding
his feet as he rides an inline four
for the first time since he was an
official Suzuki rider in 2014.
Now WorldSBK inductee
Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha)
was 14th fastest in his second
winter test in Spain saying, "The
biggest thing is that this track
is simple, compared to Aragon,
but it is hard to put everything
together and do a good time. I
have been struggling a little bit
to find places to make up time,
but the R1 has been working well
and we have been trying a lot of
different things. We are still trying
to figure out that base setting that
we are going to try to use at all
the tracks."
