Vinales Heads Day One at Jerez Test
M
onster Energy Yamaha
MotoGP's Maverick Vinales
set a 1:37.131 lap on day one of
the season-ending Jerez Test to
head Fabio Quartararo (Petronas
Yamaha SRT) by 0.754, with
Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar),
teammate Alex Rins and Quartar-
aro's teammate Franco Morbidelli
completing the top five.
Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez
suffered a crash at Turn 13 as red
flags and showers disrupted the
opening day of action, one of many
riders to crash including Avintia
stand-in rider Eric Granado.
Vinales seemed content with
using the aluminum swingarm on
his Yamaha as he immediately went
quick in the morning, dipping into
the 1:38 range before getting his
time down to a 1:37. Both he and
teammate Valentino Rossi had one
2020 and one 2019 bike in the
garage, with Rossi lapping on the
new bike with the carbon swingarm
for larger parts of the day.
Reigning World Champion
Marquez had three bikes in the
box and on the other side, his
double World Champion brother
Alex Marquez had two bikes. The
Jerez Test gives the 2019 Moto2
World Champion a chance to
spend more time adjusting to Mo-
toGP, with one of Alex Marquez'
Hondas featuring carbon rein-
forcement around the headstock.
Alex Marquez continued to work
with the 2019 RC213V, finishing
P17 on the timesheets, with older
brother Marc Marquez taking up
the testing work on the 2020 bike
to end the day sixth.
LCR Honda Castrol's Cal
Crutchlow ended the day seventh,
Red Bull KTM's Pol Espargaro
was eighth, and Ducati team-
sters Danilo Petrucci and Andrea
Dovizioso rounded out the top 10
on day one at Jerez. CN
Vinales continued
his searing pace
from the Valencia
test to head day
one at Jerez.
