LOOKING BACK
Mike Baldwin was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago to
accompany our interview the recovering road racer. Baldwin was badly
injured at an AMA National at Loudon nearly six months earlier and was
still in the hospital, still dealing with a broken leg (among other injuries
that had already healed)... Amateur motocrossers raced on the same
track the pros did the night before at Anaheim Stadium. The top rider that
day? Johnny O'Mara… B-2-V was held but only as a semi-organized trail
ride.

Our cover photo 50 years ago was taken at the start of the third annual
Barstow-to-Vegas Hare & Hound. We said it was the largest desert race ever
in terms of entries, which amounted to approximately 1500. J.N. Roberts
took the win for the second time in a row… Inter-Am Motocross visited
Westlake, California, where Sweden's Arne Kring took the win ahead of
Belgian Ake Jonsson and top American rider Gary Bailey… We had a
feature on female motorcycle racer Debbie Sanders.
Sweden's Arne
Kring won the
Inter-Am Motocross
that was held in

Scott Plessinger captured his first career AMA Hare
Scrambles Championship in Massachusetts 30 years ago.
