VOLUME 56 ISSUE 46 NOVEMBER 19, 2019 P49 Australian. Russell earned fourth overall individual, a minute and 40.65 seconds behind his teammate in both individual and E2 results. Sipes started out the week third, just 0.32 seconds ahead of Robert and 6.47 in front of Russell, but he yo-yoed in and out of the top 10, ultimately ending the week sixth overall and second in E1. "I know I can ride a little bit better, but I just wanted this team to win—that's my main goal," Sipes said. "I missed out on the first team win—not by my choice, just some unfortunate circumstances—but I'm really happy to be here for this one." For Baylor, the week was frustrating trying to get used to his KTM 500 EXC- F since he normally races a 450 XC-F, NO REST FOR THE WEARY While off-road racing in the U.S. is mostly in the east, out west, there are still several series going on. In fact, Nic Garvin is planning on landing at LAX where a friend will pick him up and drive straight to Baja to begin pre-running for the Baja 1000 that starts at 3:00 A.M. on Friday. Taylor Robert is another with no break. He said, "I've got to go home and go straight to Primm, [Nevada], for a WORCS race, so after the Primm WORCS race, I'll prob- ably just spend some time with my wife and my family, and we'll go to our beach house down in Mexico for some R&R and just enjoy it. I have a pretty short off- season because my racing starts back up in January, so I'm racing pretty much through the end of November, then I have Thanks- giving and then a [KTM team] photo shoot and the Caselli Ride Day in December [14], then we're back at it in January." PASSERI, SALA BACK ON TRACK The 4th FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy took place over the final three days of the main race, the 120-plus competitors spread across five different classes based on age of bike (with a number of riders looking twice as old as their machines). Italian legend Stefano Passeri not only won C82 for bikes from 1982 and before, he was also the fastest of the field on his KTM 250 GS. Teammate Giovanni Sala may have drawn the most applause, as he rode to the C79 win on his slightly older 250 GS, the likable former champ with the perpetual smile ever gracious off the bike. Sadly, the race was marred by the death of Italy's Pierluigi Mat- tioli who suffered a fatal heart attack while riding his twin-shock Husky 250 in the E86 class. NO HOESS Fred Hoess was the only American entered in the Enduro Vintage Trophy, but the overall winner of the inaugural race in 2016 ended up with customs reportedly refusing to accept his 1982 Husqvarna WR 250 into the country, the reason being that it allegedly had some fuel in the tank. Though a private party offered to rent him a bike, he decided it needed far more work than he was willing to do in the time allotted and for the $1500 asking price, so he ended up sitting this one out. BUCKET LIST Brian Storrie intended to buy the 2020 Husqvarna TE 250i he rode in Portugal, but instead of ship- ping it back to Texas, he plans to leave it with a friend in Spain so he could hit a few bucket list extreme races next year and have his own bike at each one. PLANNING AHEAD Next year, the 95th ISDE will take place in northern Italy, south of Milan. The dates are August 31 to September 5.
