Alex Marquez Joins Repsol Honda
2
019 Moto2 World Champion
Alex Marquez will join the
Repsol Honda squad alongside
his brother, Marc, for the 2020
MotoGP season.
The younger of the two Mar-
quez brothers will replace Jorge
Lorenzo, who announced his
retirement from the sport at the
Valencia season finale.
Alex Marquez's promotion to
the Repsol Honda will be the first
time two brothers will occupy
factory Honda motorcycles in
the same year and on the same
team. His signing comes at the
expense of Johann Zarco, who
was strongly rumored to be in
line for the ride.
Alex Marquez started his grand
prix career in 2012 in a wildcard
ride at Indianapolis, prior to a full
time berth in 2013. He took the
2015 Moto3 title after a season-
long fight with Australian Jack
Miller on the Red Bull KTM in
2014, before stepping up to
Moto2 in 2015.
He would have to wait until
2017 to notch his first win in the
category, and took the 2019
Moto2 title with one round to
spare at Sepang in Malaysia.
As for Zarco, he has recently
been courted by the Avin-
tia Ducati squad but publicly
shunned the operation as "not a
top team." However, the French-
man was seen in the factory
Ducati truck at Valencia, with
rumors circulating the paddock
he's been offered the seat of
Karel Abraham on upgraded
2019 equipment. No decision
from either Zarco or Ducati had
been made as Cycle News pub-
lished this article. CN
